The year 2020 is a hard time for everyone with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic all over the world. One week later after I arrived in Japan, Tokyo entered into its first COVID-19 state of emergency. I still remember and am very thankful for the time when Tokimatsu sensei drove to the dormitory and gave me the COVID prevention kit by himself. From that point, I know that I was very fortunate to have Tokimatsu sensei as my supervisor.
Unlike the other laboratory, students at Tokimatsu Laboratory are required to set the research themes and carry out research activities by themselves. Thus, I believed this is a great opportunity for students who want to develop their own paths. During my master's program under the Energy Science and Engineering course, most of the classes have been done online as according to the government’s policy. Not only do the students have to adapt to this new learning environment, but the professors also have to prepare much more with all the restrictions and online learning tools. Tokimatsu laboratory also has to adapt to this new environment. And in my opinion, the management has been done pretty well with various support, consultation, and discussion to help the students achieve their goals.
My student life turned out quite differently than I've had expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2 years passed by very fast. And very soon, I will have to start my Ph.D. journey. Nevertheless, looking back in time, I realized that I was very fortunate and grateful to be a part of Tokimatsu Lab member. Thus, I would like to thank Tokimatsu sensei for his willingness to become my supervisor, and for his support towards my research.

ファーストコンタクトメールは、1年半前の2019年9月3日。短期受入はそれまでも何人かあったが、普通過程では初めてのタイの学生。しかも筑波大卒業。修博一貫の王立タイ国政府奨学金を受給。修了後は母国の大学教員になることが約束されている。研究室での研究内容や論文なども見て関心を持ったのこと。これは是非と。的確に情報収集して、応募プログラムやコース選択などを既に決めており、応募書類含めてほぼ完備な返答をくれる。こうした「応募」に関する事項は、奨学金に限らず、エネルギー情報卓越など、手抜かりなく準備してあり、大変安心が出来る。無事合格し、大学寮入寮手続きなどと交信するうちにCovid。入国制限や出国側からも文書が必要とする中、来日。こんな時分に学生証の受渡に宣誓書類まで求められる中、その様式のダウンロード先まで見つけて他2名の入学者と共有。無事TIECに入寮した彼にも消毒液などと共に、4月7日に手渡す。
Covidの状況であっても、母国との往復を時折敢行、成功していた。帰国・再来日が困難な留学生の存在を耳にする中では、これは不幸中の幸い。それまで何度もあったタイへの渡航機会が閉ざされた私の代わりに、好物のタイのお酒やドライマンゴーを持ってきてくれた。入学後のCovidの状況は手探りとは言え、月1回程度のメール交信に。ただDropboxには状況報告をするようなシステムでコミュニケーションを継続。彼はいつも1,2ページに詳細に講義や研究だけでなく、心身健康状態まで何かあれば状況を報告してくれる。ただあの状況では奨学金を維持するための好成績獲得に心血を注ぐ必要あり、と。そうした中の8月下旬になって、彼から現在の研究テーマを行いたいと。最も流行のもの（AI, PV）の掛け算と、ポピュラーなArcGISなので、世界のどこかで誰かがやっている可能性が懸念される旨は伝え、可能性を探る旨を承知した程度だった。その後には、おおよそ1年前の6月にはAlvin先生に技術的なことで教えてもらいたい、という話に。それがドップリ嵌まることに。結局、それがそのまま継続。世界初の研究と、オリジナリティを主張でき、査読付き論文が出せて、学位になるかも、そのまま彼の課題に。研究の状況をもっと深く把握したいと思いつつ、独立独歩なのかも知れないと、彼のペースを理解するのに時間を要している。
そうした中でも、彼はMISWでもAOTULE学生発表会でも、2回ともトップの表彰を受賞。特段にプレゼンの練習を私の前で行う訳でも、苦しんでいる様子も無く、飄々として華々しい成果を挙げた。そうした彼の博士課程に乞うご期待。
