KSLA DISTINGUISHED COUNCIL AWARD

GUIDELINES

Council must meet all the applicable criteria for the KSLA Council Leadership Award. In addition, for this award, councils must meet the first 3 items and two additional items, by the designated deadlines, in order to meet the criteria for the award.


  1. Upon invitation from KSLA and on a rotating basis, an additional local council officer (or designee), attends all of the scheduled meetings, to which he/she is invited. (A Regional Director or the Council President may not serve as the additional officer). The attendance sheet must be signed to indicate the council was represented since this document will be used to verify this criterion.

  1. Council conducts three different activities from the list below:
    1. Celebrate Literacy Award (e.g., honoring an individual or group in your community who promotes literacy in your local council area)
    2. International Project (Click here for ideas.)
    3. Newspapers in Education (Click here for ideas.)
    4. Reading Project in the Community (any project that provides books or experiences with books to children and/or adults in the local community)
    5. Local Scholarship (e.g., high school senior, undergraduate, and/or graduate student pursuing an education degree)
    6. Teachers as Readers (e.g., professional book discussion, new children’s literature presentation)

3. At least two council officers, in addition to the Local Council President, attends the KSLA Leadership Workshop held in June. KSLA will pay for up to three local council officers to attend the June Leadership Workshop. A fourth officer may attend at the council’s expense. KSLA Board of Directors will determine if certain council officers are required to attend. If no determination is set, the local council treasurer and membership chairperson or designees are strongly recommended to attend.

4. Choose two additional items in order to meet all the criteria for the KSLA Distinguished Council Award. All of the activities can be documented and recorded on the same form (from the activities above) by clicking here.

Option 1: Council provides volunteers to work a total of four hours at the annual

conference. (Volunteers must sign-in at the conference. It is preferred that volunteers submit a volunteer form and be scheduled prior to the conference.)

Option 2: Council conducts an additional international or community service project or provides another scholarship for a different level of student.

Option 3: Council coordinates one of its meetings with another reading council.

Option 4: Council creates and maintains a website that is linked to the KSLA website and

Is updated with the current year’s officers and council programs.

Regional Director will check this item on September 30th of the current program year.

Option 5: Council formulates an advocacy plan in order to facilitate communication with legislators and/or other community members or groups concerning educational issues, and/or raising awareness in the area in which the council is located. Click here to fill out the advocacy plan.

Option 6: Council increases their KSLA membership by 5% from July 1st to the last day of February of the following year.
