Research

On my birthday weekend, the efforts and research I am doing to understand Philippine English received a mention from Ariane Borlongan. He pens a column for The Manila Times, the oldest running national newspaper in the Philippines. The article link is available here. It may still be inaccessible to non-subscribers, but I will include the column clipping below.

Mentoring

I will be serving as a volunteer mentor for the incoming cohort of low-income high school students at Lumiere. One of their directors reached out to me in January 2024, and I have finally onboarded in February 2024. My role involves assisting students in developing and writing their research projects to better prepare them for college.

Leadership

At the age of 17, I was elected as Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman in our town, which had a population of over 60,000 people. I served from 2010 to 2013, just before the Sangguniang Kabataan was reformed into its current structure. Alongside my seven council members, we implemented various initiatives and provided services and training to children and youth in our town, ranging from livelihood and capacity building to scholarships and sports programs. One of the ordinances I am particularly proud of drafting and passing is the extension of the early 1990s scholarship program of our town, which had provided financial support to 320 low-income but academically motivated students annually. Moreover, partners have recognized our youth council's contribution to peace-building and youth empowerment and made our efforts visible internationally (look up "Kevin" in the pdf).

I was interviewed by a regional news outlet about my thoughts on the impending ratification of the Sangguniang Kabataan. Despite my official name plaque being in front of the reporter, he mistakenly referred to me as "Kenneth Samejon". Oops. I recorded this news segment when it aired for posterity, and I am glad that I did.

I also attempted to document the final days of my Sangguniang Kabataan chairmanship, leading to the creation of this blog.
