Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution is a museum, education, and research complex in Washington, DC and New York City, NY. The SI consists of 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoo, and many fabulous outdoor gardens. Among the 11 museums located on the National Mall are the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. The Mary Livingston Ripley Garden, along the eastern border of the Arts and Industries Building, is a treasure--its meandering paths, Euonymus espaliers, raised beds, and displays of diverse plant species are not to be missed.
