The San Francisco Botanical Garden is located at the Strybing Arboretum in the Golden Gate Park. While the design for the garden dates to the 1880s, its construction did not begin until Helene Strybing donated the necessary funds in 1927. Planting began in 1937 with support from the Works Progress Administration and the garden opened to the public in 1940. Today the garden features more than 9,000 plant species from around the world including a vast rhododendron collection. The Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture provides visitors with resources to learn about ornamental plants and gardening.
