Where to find Trans Policy News?
I get a lot my news about laws and public policies affecting trans people from social media posts as well as a collection of particular sites and blogs.
Websites and blogs
The Movement Advancement Project (MAP) keeps track of a variety of civil rights issues and organizes information about them graphically in easy to follow ways, including through coded maps and tables broken down by particular topic. This section is specifically about LGBTQ2SIA+ rights.
Erin in the morning is Erin Reed's blog/news site. She famously maintains a Youth Risk Map and Adult Risk Map on the site for trans people, and is a contributor to the spreadsheet on LGBTQ+ Legislative Tracking Google Sheets for 2024 and 2023. She also maintains a Google Map of informed consent gender clinics and posts to a variety of social media platforms, sometimes liveblogging legislative sessions on X when anti-trans legislation is on the agenda.
Evan Urquhart's Assigned Media
Media Matters, particularly Ari Drennan's stories
The ACLU's Transgender Rights sections, particularly the work of attorney Chase Strangio and the media relations of Gillian Branstetter
A variety of places watch the development of anti-Trans legislation in bulk, maintaining lists of all the bills:
The aforementioned LGBTQ+ Legislative Tracking Google Sheet curated by Allison Chapman, Alejandra Caraballo, Erin Reed, and others.
Their Twitter Bot @LegiAlerts posts when various bills are introduced or their status changes.
At the state level, they tend to count the same number of bills as the ACLU but update more frequently.
Trans Legislation Tracker has a higher bill count than the Chapman/Caraballo/Reed Sheets, but is slower to update.
Track Trans Legislation counts the fewest bills in general among those that are trans focused
The Human Rights Campaign is slow to update and less complete as well, but can have some in depth stories sometimes.
Many folks on social media post news, opinions, and analysis of the trans legal situation including:
