Kayla
Kayla, also known by her Chinese name Xiǎo Xīng, is the main character of Hero's Sandbox. She's some random child that for some reason got isekai'd into the world of Plat, and is trying to figure out how she got here & how to get home.
She's currently under the care of Mx. Hornheart, staying in the guest room of his library.
❤️Personality
Compassionate, creative, inquisitive, mellow; though also oblivious, deadpan, reserved. Kayla isn't exactly heroic adventurer material. She's very much a sheltered city girl who was not at all prepared to be suddenly dropped into a fantasy land without her parents.
Still, they're a good kid with a soft & sentimental heart, & can generally take most things in stride. They're not overly innocent- in fact, they're pessimistic & cynical by nature; but try their best to be kind, respectful, & assume good faith, despite this. Not being a total jerk just seems like the least they can do, y'know? They're quiet & closed-off, but incredibly genuine & sincere in what actions or words they do choose to express; even to the point of being blunt or (usually unintentionally) rude.
She doesn't consider herself to be anything special, nor does she really want to be, but her humbleness often veers into self-deprecation, apathy, & feelings of uselessness. She tries not to think about it too much & makes an effort to get out of her own head; but not-so-deep-down, she doesn't believe she really matters, or can make much of a difference, as an ordinary person in such a huge world. She's just some insignificant nobody; would anyone really miss her if she disappeared, beit from Earth, or from Plat? Would anyone care? Should anyone care? Would it even matter, either way? What's the point?
They're melancholic, lonely, & don't really offer the same understanding & patience they show others to themself; believing that them being nice is just a regular, basic thing anyone could do, that doesn't really effect anything in the long run, & certainly doesn't deserve praise.
Little does she know just how heroic she already is, for simply doing her best to be kind.

🔬Random Facts
She considers herself a-spec as in, she'd rather not be in a relationship at all & doesn't usually find anyone particularly attractive, but if she had to & got to choose, she'd rather go out with a girl or enby person than a guy. She has had exactly one serious crush in the past & it was on Scorpia from SPOP.
Not athletic at ALL. She gets tired super easily, takes longer to process information that isn't written text, & has like zero spatial awareness. It's not necessarily a bad thing; but it does mean she has to be a little more creative & cautious on her adventures, instead of swinging in guns-blazing.
Bad with faces & names. She barely remembers Mx. Hornheart's name & just calls them by honourifics & titles, or just calls them, "You".
She is NOT fantasy-genre-savvy at ALL. She's always been a sci-fi nerd. She's having the worst time rn lol
Canonically a Whovian! She doesn't have a favourite Doctor, but her favourite companion is Donna.
Spec-bio nerd is surrounded by fantasy animals with little-to-no proper documentation, what happens next will not shock you!
Her name, 小星 means "Little Star", but the pronounciation can also kinda sound like 小心 which means "careful". (It's not an actual Chinese name in the traditional sense, but she's fictional & under the enby umbrella & I love having pretentious symbolism & I'm Chinese myself so whatever)
Has been recovering from depression since they were 9 & was seeing a therapist before being isekai'd, which is part of why she's been able to stay relatively calm & take things in stride. She knows how to cope, somewhat. She's still very much a mentally ill barely-teenager who's Going Through It, though!
Can't go back to Plat after she comes back home, but she does get to keep the fire glove, which still works on Earth.
Can switch from vaguely British-sounding English to casual Singlish at the drop of a hat. One moment it's "Woah, that was scary. Are you okay?" & the next it's "Wah, 吓死人 leh. You okay or not?"
Technically a rehash of an old self-inserty OC from an unfinished novel I wrote when I was 12, now developed to be less self-inserty & more her own character.
Her birthday, 13th November, is on World Kindness Day!
