한국어 발음 검사 (KPD)는 학습자와 교사에게 학습자의 한국어 발음의 강점과 어려움이 무엇인지 더 잘 이해하도록 도와주는 시험입니다. '발음의 어려움'이라는 것은 발음할 때, 다른 사람이 그 소리를 정확하게 알아듣기 힘들다는 것을 의미합니다. 그런 어려움 때문에 말하는 단어를 다른 사람이 이해하기 어려울 수 있다는 것이지요.
The Korean Pronunciation Diagnostic (KPD) is a test that helps students (and their teachers or tutors) better understand their strengths and difficulties in pronouncing the sounds of Korean. A difficulty in pronunciation means that it is (sometimes) hard for other people to accurately hear the sound when you pronounce it, which can make it hard for people to understand the words you speak.
KPD에는 한국어의 음소 (기본 언어 소리) 28개가 포함되어 있습니다. 각 소리에 대한 여러가지 과제와 문제를 통해서 학습자가 얼마나 일관적으로 각 소리를 발음하고 들을 수 있는지를 알려줍니다.
KPD는 조음 (발음)과 지각 (청취) 이렇게 2 영역으로 구성되고, 각 영역에는 2개의 과제가 있습니다:

The KPD features the 28 phonemes (sounds) of Korean. Multiple tasks and questions for each sound reveal how consistently test-takers can pronounce and hear each sound.
The KPD has two sections, Production (pronunciation) and Perception (hearing), and each section has two tasks:
A teacher or tutor is needed to score the Production section. Teachers/tutors will also want to record the test-taker for the Production section. See the 검사 자료 page for more details.
KPD를 보고나면 한 가지의 점수만 있는 것이 아니라, 56 가지의 점수가 나옵니다. 즉, 한국어 각각의 소리에 대한 조음 점수와 지각 점수가 나오는 것입니다. 이렇게 방대한 점수를 통해 학습자의 발음의 강점과 약점을 자세하게 이해할 수 있습니다.
각 소리의 조음과 지각에 대한 점수가 퍼센트로 (0%부터 100%까지) 나옵니다. 높은 점수는 한국어로 의사소통을 할 때, 그 소리로 인한 어려움이 드물다는 것을 뜻합니다. 반면 낮은 점수는 (< 75%) 의사소통 중 그 소리 때문에 자주 어려움이 있을 수 있다는 것을 나타냅니다. 따라서, 점수가 낮은 소리를 더 연습하고 주의를 기울이는 것이 좋습니다.
발음 (조음) 점수는 학습자가 얼마나 원어민처럼 발음하는지를 측정하는 것이 아닙니다. 이 점수는 듣는 사람이 얼마나 일정하게 학습자가 발음한 소리를 정확히 인식할 수 있는지를 반영합니다. 다시 말하면, 학습자의 'ㅉ'소리가 서울에서 자란 한국어 원어민 친구의 발음과 완벽히 똑같지 않더라도, 다른 사람들이 학습자가 'ㅉ'라고 한 것을 ('ㅈ'나 'ㅊ'말고) 쉽게 그리고 일관되게 알아들 수 있다면 문제가 없다는 것입니다.
The KPD does not give just one score - you get 56 scores! In other words, you get a score for each sound in production and perception. This large number of scores provides a highly detailed understanding of your strengths and weaknesses.
For each sound, in production and perception, a percentage score is given (0-100%). Very high scores mean that the sound probably causes few difficulties for you when communicating in Korean. However, lower scores (< 75%) indicate that you might have some regular difficulty with the sound. More practice and attention to these sounds would be helpful.
Pronunciation scores are not a measure of how close to a native speaker you are. Rather, pronunciation scores reflect how consistently a listener can accurately identify the sound you tried to make. In other words, even if your "ㅉ" sound doesn't sound exactly the same as the pronunciation of your friend from Seoul, there is no problem if other people can easily and consistently identify that you said " ㅉ" (and not "ㅈ" or "ㅊ").
KPD를 보는 이유는 간단합니다. 한국어 발음을 향상시키고 싶다는 것이지요. 학습자가 정확하게/일정하게 발음하지 않는 소리를 발견함으로서, 교사와 학습자가 수업에서나 수업 밖에서 무엇에 집중해야 하는지를 더 잘 알 수 있습니다. 또한, KPD는 학습자가 특정 소리를 얼마나 잘 들을 수 있는지를 알려주기 때문에 학습 계획을 만드는 데 도움이 됩니다. 즉, 소리를 정확하게 듣는 것이 어려우면, 그 소리를 발음하는 것도 어려울 확률이 높습니다. 이런 경우에는 듣기 연습이 중요할 것입니다.
KPD 결과는 아래와 같은 경우에 사용될 수 있습니다:
The reason for taking the KPD is simple: A desire to improve one's Korean pronunciation. By identifying sounds that a learner does not produce clearly/consistently, teachers and learners have a better idea of what to focus on in class or out of class. The KPD also provides information on how well a learner can hear a sound, which can help plan effective learning activities: If you have trouble hearing a sound clearly, you are likely to have trouble pronouncing it, so listening practice would be important.
