Koganecho Bazaar 2026 in Gwangju Biennale (I) - A Neighborhood That Breathes Like a Living Being
Ctis do not exist as completed blueprints. Places that breathe elevated railway tracks, within interstitial spaces of urban ceters, and along the boundaries of institutions and regulations consistently evade the neat categorization of orderly commercial districts or quiet residential areas. Since the establishment of the Koganecho Area Management Center in 2009, Koganecho has stepped out from the shadow of its historical stigma to operate as a coalition where art, the local community, and public interests intersect. Yet, approximately 17 years later, amid real estate financialization and institutional precarity, its once-solid foundation is shaking anew. Rather than presenting Koganecho as a packaged outcome of urban regeneration or an attractive object of consumption, this exhibition views the neighborhood as a "living organism" intertwined with conflict, culnerabilirty, and the competing desires of diverse social groups. The relationships forged among landowners, migrants, small business owners, and artists are understood not as a seamless fusion into a single unity, but as a dynamic site where distinct boundaries collide and coexist. Taking place at the intersection of the Gwangju Biennale, this exhibition intersects the accumulated interstitial memories of Koganecho with the urban context of Gwangju. Art institutions and artists from across Asia raise questions surrounding mobility, labor, residency, and memory, responding through their respective artistic languages. Instead of offering a singular answer, we invite you to an open arena to explore the possibilities of new sensibilities and relationalities blooming out of instability.
