Koenaru (stylized as koenaru) was originally created by Sebastian D. in May 2024 as a personal electronic music project developed privately alongside his ongoing work under the name iemuki. Throughout 2024 and into early 2025, Sebastian continued actively creating and releasing music as iemuki while simultaneously building the foundation, sound, and identity behind Koenaru behind the scenes. During this period, the project existed primarily as an evolving creative outlet centered around electronic music production, experimentation, sound design, and melodic ideas that would later shape the project’s public direction.
The first Koenaru single, Back It Up!, was released on May 27, 2025, becoming the project’s earliest public release before the Koenaru identity had been fully adopted publicly. Shortly afterward, on July 1, 2025, Sebastian officially transitioned toward Koenaru full time and publicly introduced the project as its primary identity moving forward.
Later in July 2025, Koenaru released its first EP, :3, featuring Back It Up! alongside Broken Sprites. The release helped establish the early foundation of the project and marked the beginning of Koenaru’s public presence as an independent electronic music project. In November 2025, Koenaru released Aether, continuing to expand the project’s evolving sound, production style, and artistic direction.
As the project continued to grow throughout late 2025 and into 2026, Dom D., a friend,a of Sebastian, became increasingly involved in the creative process behind Koenaru. What initially began as collaboration between friends gradually evolved into a much deeper creative partnership. Over time, Dom became heavily involved across production, melodies, sound design, arrangement, and overall artistic direction, contributing to a growing portion of the project’s music and creative identity.
By 2026, Koenaru had naturally evolved from a solo project into a shared creative effort shaped by both members. On May 25, 2026, Koenaru officially became a duo consisting of Sebastian D. and Dom D.
