With the series' renewal, two new main cast members were announced. Mark Hamill was cast as Talus, an old Templar veteran of the Crusades who lived through a decade of captivity in the Middle East, and now tasked with training younger knights.[31] One of his ex-students is Landry, once a master himself but forced to start over after breaking his vows in the first season.[39] Tom Forbes was cast as Prince Louis, the violent and unpredictable son of King Philip.[40]

Genevieve Gaunt was cast in the recurring role of Isabella, King Philip's daughter and on her way to becoming the woman who history would call the "she-wolf of France". Gaunt replaced Sabrina Bartlett, who portrayed the princess in season one.[40] Additional recurring roles include Irish actor Peter O'Meara as Chartres Temple Master Berenger, Underworld: Blood Wars actress Clementine Nicholson as Princess Margaret, Prince Louis's wife,[41][42] and Claire Cooper as Sister Anne.[43]

Mackinnon served as the principal director, handling most episodes. Metin Hseyin and David Petrarca (Game of Thrones) also directed a block each. Knightfall was shot primarily in Prague, Czech Republic,[49] with its base at the Barrandov Studios. Several exteriors imitating medieval Paris were built in surrounding suburbs and villages, including Prhonice, and Doksany. Streets in Old Town and vihov Castle were utilized.[50] Filming started on July 8. According to Barrandov CEO Petr Tich, the studio was chosen partially based on the quality of the 15th-century interior they had previously built for Borgia.[51] According to Tom Cullen, the main cast had a two-and-a-half week "boot camp" with French stuntman and fight choreographer Cdric Proust. Cullen had taken fencing classes in the past, but had not swung a sword in eight years.[52] The total cost for the season was CZK 1.1 billion.[53]

On August 26, 2016, a fire broke out at the backlot of Barrandov Studios, destroying the exterior sets for Knightfall, with an estimated damage of 100 million CZK (US$4.5 million).[54][55] Only a small part of the set, representing a medieval city, was saved. The following Monday, shooting resumed at another location in the city. The fire affected the production schedule, but the production was not to be moved to another city, and would focus on street locations. David Minkowski, a senior producer at Stillking Films, added, "In conjunction with our insurers and Barrandov construction, we are planning to rebuild the destroyed backlot set as soon as possible and complete filming in Czech Republic,.[56] Filming for the first season wrapped in mid-December 2016.[57]

A teaser trailer debuted on February 1, 2017, on History Channel, depicting a bloody Templar helmet. The series premiered on December 6, 2017.[62] The second season premiered on March 25, 2019.[63][64]

On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, season 1 had an approval rating of 55% based on 20 reviews.[66] On Metacritic, the series has a weighted average score of 47 out of 100, based on reviews from 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[67]

For the second season, Rotten Tomatoes listed only four reviews, with three favorable; two of the reviews praised the addition of Mark Hamill with one commenting that "the barely recognizable Star Wars icon carries every scene in which he appears".[68]

The network also announced that Aaron Helbing (The Flash, Spartacus: War of the Damned) was brought on as showrunner and executive producer for Knightfall season 2.

May 13, 2019 (End)PreviousSeason 1Season 2 of Knightfall premiered on March 25, 2019 on History in the United States and concludes on May 13, 2019, consisting of eight episodes. Below is a brief review of what happened in the second season of Knightfall.

It was a season of remorse, piety, and penitence for Landry as he was forced to humble himself before God and the Templar Master, Talus (Mark Hamill). In that journey, he found purpose again in helping train the new brothers of the Templar, keeping his daughter alive, and ultimately facing King Phillip (Ed Stoppard) in an epic showdown in the last moments of the finale.

SYFY WIRE spoke to lead actor Tom Cullen on the phone to discuss some key moments in tonight's Knightfall finale and what a third season might look like if HISTORY picks it up.

Also, because they spent an entire season apart from each other, they kind of go at each other expecting that person to be the same person. But what comes back at them is a different person, because during the second season they've both changed immeasurably. I think that that's quite surprising for both of them, and they don't quite know how to handle it. They're both right, and they're both wrong, at the same time.

We went back and forth with lots of different ideas about how we should resolve it. I think the audience knows, and we all felt that the season would be heading to some kind of ultimatum between Landry and Philip. I feel like the brilliant foreshadowing of that dream in Episode 1 where Philip kills Landry, it's very much a top and tail of the season.

The History series' epic second season came to a close on Monday night, with Landry (Tom Cullen) and the Knights Templar able to escape being burned alive at the hands of King Philip (Ed Stoppard). That's not to say all of them actually survived, however -- or that Philip did.

The pair's dream sequence battle in the season two premiere foreshadowed that only one would come out alive -- but after Landry killed his nemesis, what's left to fight for? In an exclusive interview with ET, Cullen opened up about Monday's sophomore closer and the questions that still linger.

Well, going into the finale, I wasn't sure you'd survive based on where we left the Templars in episode seven. You had previously said that the Templars would survive Friday the 13th, but I was surprised by how the season ended. How did you feel about it?

It's a really cool episode, and it almost feels like a bottle episode, because it only takes place over a handful of hours. And I think that it's an interesting way to end the season. The thing about the Templars is that in many ways, the story begins at their end. That's where the mythology starts, which is kind of exciting. I mean, having said that, they weren't dissolved in other countries like England for another eight years after [the events of the finale].

Let's talk about that fight between Landry and Philip. It was such a big moment for your character and something that had been teased since last season. What went into shooting that confrontation?  e24fc04721
