I followed the example blog which provided on week 7 to model the head of the iron giant
The head was not really hard to model, i followed the tutorial to make the eye, i created 2 cylinders and use "Difference A-B" to make the holes.
I created a cube and cylinder and combine them to make the chin
Neck was also easy to model, i created this with the "Extrude" function.
The torso was quite difficult to model and it was the hardest part of the project since there were only 3 reference images, and it was not clear to see. The lines were all stuck together, so I spent some time understanding the outline of the torso. The biggest challenge was reading the reference images. I modeled half of the torso and duplicated it instead of creating a whole torso, which could save more time.
Since the model is large, I separated the UV into three areas: the head, torso, and the bottom.
I tried to rig the Iron Giant to resemble the Sprit Gun of Yusuke Urameshi from YuYu Hakusho, which is a Japanese manga series However, I encountered significant challenges, particularly in achieving this pose. The main issue I faced was the deformation of the fingers and arms, and I struggled to find a suitable solution to address it but after the workshop of week 11, i learnt how to fix it with the painting weight function. I learnt i can just select specific part of the arm for painting weight instead of select thw whole arm.
I tried to set the lighting in a way that resembled the iconic 21th Century Fox logo, which came to mind when I was working on the lighting. Seeing the golden iron giant reminded me of that logo, and it inspired me to position the spotlights lower, as I think that this angle would enhance the sharpness of the golden color.
