Hey everyone! I’m Will Klearman (he/him) and this year I am the sports editor and also hold my own sports column “Keeping it Klear”. Being an editor has been an amazing experience for me, as I love working with our wonderful staffers and talking about sports at ETHS. I am a junior and this is my third year on staff. Previously, in addition to being on the sports staff, I worked in the opinion section where I wrote my infamous article, ‘Normalize Dogs Out’. Being on The Evanstonian has been an amazing experience for me; throughout my three years on the paper, I have made many of my closest friends and have been welcomed into a truly vibrant community. Participating in journalism at ETHS has been a super fun and valuable experience, and has definitely been a huge part of my high school experience. Outside of the paper, I play tennis for the high school team and work at my synagogue. I love hanging out with friends, trying new food, and watching sports, particularly my Northwestern Wildcats. I am a huge college sports fan and have been growing up going to Northwestern football and basketball games since I was 5. Recently, I have begun to take an interest in politics. In college, I plan on studying economics or political science but I also plan on working on the school paper, and hopefully covering college basketball! After college, I am still pretty unsure what I want to do but I'm sure I'll figure it out.
In this story, I highlighted Evanston's extremely progressive rowing program, which challenges the sport's predominantly white and elite history. The team was established just 2 years ago and they are pioneering a new progressive approach to the sport.
Perhaps my most infamous article, but also maybe my best. Also, I'm not sure how I should take this but it is my most-read story ever with over 3,000 reads and also, in terms of clicks, it is in the top ten for all stories ever written in The Evanstonian since we went digital a few years ago.
At the beginning of my junior year, I started my own column series where each month I discuss something that I find interesting in the sports world.
In my first column, linked above, I discussed one of my favorite journalism productions in all of sports---College GameDay.
The former sports editor Owen Chiss and I talked to Blake Peters, a Princeton basketball player and ETHS alum, in the middle of their huge March Madness run to the sweet sixteen. This is one of my favorite interviews I have ever done during my time on The Evanstonian.
Here is another college basketball story about a former Wildkit. I chose to highlight this story because covering Lance Jones gave us access to postgame interviews with Northwestern and Purdue players and coaches after they played last year. It was an amazing experience being there for the postgame interviews.
Here is my personal favorite game story I have covered--- a big win @ NT as huge underdogs. Also, above is a picture of a tweet that I recorded that accumulated over 15k views on X.
At the beginning of my junior year, I started a tradition that I hope continues after my time on The Evanstonian. Each week, as a section, we select the biggest sports game and then we all make our picks and give a quote on what we think will happen.
During basketball season in my sophomore year, my buddy Cash Nelson and I created a basketball stat sheet that made it easier for us to record stats and calculate shooting percentage (both individual and as a team), effective shooting percentage, and other advanced metrics. Out of everything I have done at The Evanstonian, this is definitely one of my favorite contributions I have made as it blended computer science and journalism- two things I like.
