While playing the game players must try to match their clients' personal tastes with that of their prospective dates. If their attributes are to the other's liking, this will cause the pair to fall in love with one another, but matching up people with opposing interests runs the risk of ruining the date. Dates are held at one of several restaurants themed around various countries, each of which has differing levels of difficulty. During the date players must successfully guide their client through minigames and typical date questions on topics such as hobbies, personality, and employment.

When you've decided to send your two theoretical lovebirds off on a date, things get even more complicated. As the date progresses, you'll need to pull the Love Handle, which spins like a slot machine and randomly presents you with different topics of discussion to choose from. If your client and their date share similar opinions about it, you're on the right track, but a strong difference in opinion will add one strike to the three you can get before the date ends on a sour note. There are a lot of random events that can happen, from calculating the proper tip to leave, picking out the right sequence of pretentious descriptions to sound like a "foodie", remembering what your server looks like from a lineup, and even what the weather was like when you arrived if you choose to talk about it... though few dates consider this lively conversation. You won't get to refer to the details about your date while you're out, so if you bring up interests, you'd better be able to remember which things from the list you're presented your match was actually into. It makes for a much smarter and more challenging experience, and more satisfying too.

Kitty Powers' Matchmaker is a dating sim in which the players plays as a matchmaker employed by Kitty Powers, the drag queen personality of British game developer Richard Franke, who has to expand a tiny little dating agency into a large one by way of creating many successful dates. This is done by matching a client, either male or female, to one of many date options, with clients seeking opposite-sex, same-sex, or either-sex dates. The success of their date is determined by the player's attention to minor personality details as well as performance in mini-games which occur during the dates.

Kpopp plays as Horse Face, a new matchmaker working for Kitty Powers. In the series, Kpopp works her way from a brand new matchmaker to a Level 12 "Saucy Sorcerer". Along the way, she meets many memorable characters and dates, typically with nerdy, artsy, or fitness interests.
