151a is the first studio album by indie pop artist Kishi Bashi. The album, whose title resembles the Japanese expression ichi-go ichi-e, meaning one time, one place, was released on April 10, 2012.[1][2] 151a, similar to Kishi Bashi's second studio album, Lighght, was produced by Kishi Bashi and was recorded in various locations, though most recording took place at Home Studios in Norfolk, Virginia.[2]

151a was released to critical acclaim, receiving a score of 77 of 100 from Metacritic based on 7 reviews.[10] James Christopher Monger of AllMusic spoke of 151a as "a trippy, intensely melodic set of nine cosmic chamber rock songs."[11]

151a by Kishi BashiSome colorful and uplifting baroque pop coming off the newly released Kishi Bashi album, 151a. The project is currently on tour with of Montreal and Deerhoof. Find dates and pick up the album via Bandcamp.

When it came to touring, though, Ishibashi chose to enlist friend and fellow musician Mike Savino, of the Brooklyn-based folk rock band Tall Tall Trees. Aside from alleviating loneliness on the road, he says having another performer on stage provides another avenue for adding variability to his music, and in doing so, again emphasize its transitory and effervescent nature.

As deeply personal as 151a undoubtedly is, the record was animated by a deep and enduring partnership. Following Kishi Bashis collaboration with of Montreals Kevin Barnes for the watershed art-pop album Paralytic Stalks, his worldview and artistic approach was transformed for the better. Strict habits hung loose, sonic palettes bled and broadened, and a one-man orchestra sprouted from a foundation of string loops.

Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym of singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Kaoru Ishibashi. Born in Seattle, Washington, Ishibashi grew up in Norfolk, Virginia where both of his parents were professors at Old Dominion University. As a 1994 graduate of Matthew Fontaine Maury High School, he went on to study film scoring at Berklee College of Music before becoming a renowned violinist. Ishibashi has recorded and toured internationally as a violinist with diverse artists such as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and most recently, the Athens, Georgia-based indie rock band, of Montreal. be457b7860
