As daughters and sons of God, united as disciples of Jesus Christ, we strive to establish Jesus Christ as the foundation of our lives by understanding, making, and living sacred covenants, and by inviting family, friends, and neighbors to do the same.
Dear Brothers & Sisters of the Kirtland Stake,
Autumn has always been my favorite season of the year. Autumn in Northeast Ohio is especially dear to my heart. As the color of the leaves transforms to deep reds, bright gold, and glowing orange and the air turns cool and crisp, I am reminded of the splendor and variety of the earth that our loving Father in Heaven created for us. The fall season places us in the middle of a spectacular display of the magnificence of God’s creation.
One of my favorite choral compositions is “For the Beauty of the Earth” by John Rutter. The second verse and chorus of that beautiful song celebrates the majesty of creation this way:
“For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night
Hill and vale and tree and flow'r
Sun and Moon and stars of light
Sun and Moon and stars of light
'Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise”
This song often repeats in my mind when I take walks with my family through the Cuyahoga National Park during this time of year. Those are treasured moments where we feel an overwhelming desire to give joyful praise for the beauty that surrounds us.
These beautiful fall days also draw my mind to the words of the Prophet Alma who pointed to the powerful evidence offered by the creation of our Father in Heaven’s power and majesty.
In Alma 30:44 we read:
The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
I sincerely believe that part of our rejoicing when our Heavenly Father declared to us His Plan was the joy we felt knowing that we would have an opportunity to experience the blessings and beauty of this world. Its every feature, its many intricate systems, its perfectly balanced atmosphere, and its immeasurable bounty bear witness of God’s love for His children.
President Russel M. Nelson offered the following witness of the importance of acknowledging and offering thanks for this beautiful world of ours.
“The Creation itself testifies of a Creator. We cannot disregard the divine in the Creation. Without our grateful awareness of God’s hand in the Creation, we would be just as oblivious to our provider as are goldfish swimming in a bowl. With deep gratitude, we echo the words of the Psalmist, who said, “O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.” April 2000 General Conference address.
I too bare witness that God lives and that this earth is perhaps the most evidence and ever-present proof of His love for us. May we each find the time to enjoy the incredible beauty of the world around us this season and take a moment to reflect on the majesty of God’s love and creation as we enjoy this precious home of ours!
With love,

Quotes from Teaching the Savior's Way:
The goal of every gospel teacher—every parent, every formally called teacher, every home teacher and visiting teacher, and every follower of Christ—is to teach the pure doctrine of the gospel, by the Spirit, in order to help God’s children build their faith in the Savior and become more like Him.
There are many things to teach about in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ—principles, commandments, prophecies, and scripture stories. But all of these are branches of the same tree, for they all have one purpose: to help all people come unto Christ and be perfected in Him (see Jarom 1:11; Moroni 10:32). So no matter what you are teaching, remember that you are really teaching about Jesus Christ and how to become like Him. The Holy Ghost can help you learn to recognize truths about the Savior and His redeeming power in each gospel principle, commandment, and prophetic teaching (see Jacob 7:10–11).
Are you teaching about sacrifice? Consider exploring with learners how the sacrifices we make point our souls to the Savior’s “great and last sacrifice” (Alma 34:10). Are you teaching about unity? Consider discussing the unity Jesus Christ achieved with His Father and His invitation for us to be one with Them (see John 17). See every gospel topic as an opportunity to teach and learn about Jesus Christ.
Every commandment also provides this opportunity. Don’t just focus on the laws of the gospel—learn also about the Lawgiver. If you discuss the Word of Wisdom and stop at the dos and don’ts of healthy living, you miss the opportunity to ponder how deeply Jesus Christ must care about us—both our spiritual and physical well-being—to give us this law. Focus on how willing and anxious the Savior is to bless us with His power to help us live His laws. Every commandment He gives us reveals something about His mind and will and heart—find joy in discovering this together!

I have thought about Laman and Lemuel lately and the time they lived, and why their attitude may have been the way it was. They lived in the post-era of a miracle, Jerusalem was saved by the Lord from the Assyrian army but still, Isaiah and many prophets had come and were preaching repentance or the destruction of Jerusalem would happen.
The Lord had led away Lehi and his family before the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian Army. I don’t know for sure, but I would imagine Lamen and Lemuel thought they were being faithful, believing the Lord would save Jerusalem and their people again. Laman and Lemuel did leave with their family, leaving behind all their possessions, which was an act of faith and obedience, but murmured and complained, never seeking answers from the Lord to gain their own testimonies along their journey. And thus Laman and Lemuel, being the eldest, did murmur against their father. And they did murmur because they knew not the dealings of that God who had created them. 1 Nephi 2:12
As we consistently choose to be obedient to the commandments, covenants, and the Lord's prophets, we choose to be like our Savior and we choose to grow in light and understanding of the Will of God.
“Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.” Hebrews 5:8-9
President Joseph Fielding Smith taught,“Obedience is the first law of heaven.” President Harold B. Lee later taught, “The safety of the church lies in the members keeping the commandments… As they keep the commandments, blessings will come.” President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “The happiness of the Latter-day Saints, the peace of the Latter-day Saints, the progress of the Latter-day Saints, the prosperity of the Latter-day Saints, and the eternal salvation and exaltation of this people lie in walking in obedience to the counsels of God.
As we are obedient to our Savior and His prophets, following His example, seeking understanding and constant change through repentance, we will be the Lord's people, Individually, as a family, as a ward, and as a stake.
“Truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come. …
“The Spirit of truth is of God. …
“And no man receiveth a fullness unless he keepeth his commandments.
“He that keepeth [God’s] commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.”
D&C 93:24,26-28
The Savior is real and He is leading his church through His prophets and apostles. He not only is our example but our advocate and our Redeemer. I know there is safety and happiness as we follow His counsel and direction.

"Then Will I Make Weak Things Become Strong" Elder Kevin S. Hamilton, April 2022 General Conference
The scriptural word for change is repentance.
The Savior, speaking through the prophet Moroni in the Book of Mormon, taught: “If men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”
We have become natural men and women because of the Fall of Adam. But through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can overcome our weakness, or our fallen natures.
Let’s review the requirements to change according to the Lord’s pattern:
First, we must humble ourselves. The Lord’s condition for change is humility. “If they humble themselves before me,” He said. The opposite of humility is pride.
Second, we must have faith in Jesus Christ. He will give us the power to overcome our weaknesses.
Third, through His grace He can make weak things become strong....His strengthening, enabling grace gives us power to overcome all obstacles, all challenges, and all weaknesses as we seek to change.
We become new, clean, different, and we simply continue to work at it every day. Sometimes it may feel like two steps forward and one step back, but we continue to humbly move forward in faith.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 9/11 National Day of Service this year! We had over 100 volunteers join us in the 5 organized projects. We did a lot of great work in the area and had so much fun doing it! We provided over 300 hours of service and donated 97 newborn diaper bag kits to Birthright Lake County.
Remember "service" can be done anywhere and at anytime! Don't save it for a special day. The Lord has promised blessings to those who help their fellow man. Let us each be a light in someone's life as we look for ways to love and serve our neighbors.
In the coming months, look for ways to celebrate the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons by reaching out to others.
