80 years, 7 months, 28 days
Marriage: Ellen Kristine Gabrielsen - married August 14, 1904
The following was taken from documents that Lloyd & June Susag researched and compiled. June, also known as "Thala June" spent hours researching Susag history.
Antonius "Anton" Sivertsen was born November 13, 1856 in Langlieplading Farm, Henning, Sparbu, Nord-Trondlelag, Norway and was christened on December 28, 1856 in Skei Kirke, Sparbu, Nord-Trondelag, Norway. He died on July 16, 1937 in New Norway, Alberta, Canada and was buried on July 18, 1937 in New Norway Cemetery, Alberta, Canada.
SUSAG MIGRATIONS: ANTON SEVERTSEN
Antonius was the first of Sivert and Andreanna's children to emigrate to America. He arrived at the Port of Detroit, June 1881. It is believed that he was sponsored by Pastor Svein Susegg, or else he emigrated with him. Pastor Svein Susegg later chose to sponsor Antonius' two brothers still in Norway, Johannes and David. He sent a message back to Norway that they should come and take advantage of schooling and he is mentioned as being a prominent and outstanding man of learning in America. It's possible he was a professor at a Lutheran college as well as a pastor. Svein and his wife, Martha, are buried near Pelican Rapids, MN.
Antonius first applied for citizenship at Douglas County, Minnesota, again on 1 Dec 1885, Sargent County, North Dakota, and was granted citizenship 20 June 1894, 4th Judicial District Court, Sargent County, ND, by Judge W.S. Lauder. Citizenship was required to complete the homestead application. Antonius homesteaded in Ransom Township, Sargent County, the NE 1/ 4, 35-130-54 on 8 Mar 1895 and on 16 Mar 1885, the SW 1/ 4 35-130-54 was purchased. This was sold 9 Nov 1888. The address given was Cayuga, North Dakota. [location of post office.]

Antonius sponsored the emigration of Sigvart Johannes Susag (Lloyd's father) from Namsos, Norway in 1909. Sigvart looked after the farm while Antonius went to New Norway, Alberta, Canada to look for land. (South of Edmonton). Antonius and his wife, Ellen Christine Gabrielson, moved to Canada summer of 1910 after Antonius purchased the SW 1/4, 3-45-21. He took along his widowed mother, Andreanna. His father. Sivert, died in 1902 and is buried near Rutland at Nordland Cemetery.

Antonius and Ellen did not have children. A local publication gave a brief history, "New Norway History - Memory Opens the Door - 1972".
"Mr. and Mrs. Anton Sivertson arrived from South (note: North) Dakota in 1910 and bought the SW 1/4 of 3-45-21. They brought with them a car load (rail) of settlers' effects such as horses, cows and machinery. Having been a butter-maker in South Dakota. Anton made butter and took care of the milk while they lived here.
The following year he headed for Southern Alberta to search for a homestead. He traveled by team and buggy, but it rained so much that he returned home without finding what he wanted: remaining here until he passed away.
Later, Mrs. Sivertson married Arthur Bakke, and they lived on the farm until she passed away in 1958. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She did a great deal of knitting and carding of wool. Arthur Bakke lived alone on the farm until he passed away in 1959.
Note: Ellen and Arthur did not have children.
Note: In March, 1995, Ralph Hammersborg from Seattle, went searching for his great-great grandmother, Andreanna's, grave in New Norway, Alberta, Canada. He found it (see account under Andreanna), but was not successful in finding Antonius' grave.
Note: June Susag made attempts in 1998 and 1999 to find more information. She contacted the Alberta Genealogy Society who confirmed the location of graves of Ellen Christine Bakke, date of interment 3 Jan 1959, 5th grave from NW 1/2 of #46 and Arthur Bakke, date of interment 12 Aug 1959, 6th grave from NW 1/2 #46. June contacted the New Norway Municipal Office who confirmed they are responsible for the New Norway Cemetery. Anne Flynn, Village Administrator, found that Andreanna A. Johnson is buried in Lot #83 in the old area. She further stated that there are ten unmarked graves in this area and they assume one of them is Antonius Severtsen. They lost the early 1900's records for these graves due to a fire. She told Lloyd she understood he might want to install a headstone for Antonius and would allow one if they are unable to confirm another location. Anne went out of her way to contact the Lutheran Church in New Norway/Edberg. Pastor Ken Grambo, telephone (780)855-3915 confirmed he has records for Antonius Severtsen. He died on July 16, 1937 and the funeral was July 18, 1937. He was 80 years and 8 months old. Pastor Grambo said the church records do not say where Antonius was buried, but it is unlikely he was buried anywhere but New Norway Cemetery. (This report dated 3/2/99). [NOTE: Obituary states "buried in New Norway Cemetery.
[Note: Norwegian Census records show: Antonius birthdate as 18 Nov 1856, and christened 28 Dec 1856, Skei Kirke, Sparbu, Nord-Trondelag, Norway.]

NOTE: THIS CONFIRMS ANTONIUS WAS BURIED IN NEW NORWAY
June Susag talked by telephone with Ms. Anne Flynn, Village Administrator, New Norway, Alberta Canada. [780-855-3915]. She remembered our conversations 1998-99 regarding location of Antonius Severtsen's grave. I was told they had done another census of the cemetery and still did not find his grave. They now believe his grave is one of the ten "lost" graves in the old area of the cemetery where Andreanna is buried. Her plot is #83. She told me the village of New Norway has no objection to the family placing a flat monument in front of Andreanna's grave as a way to mark the grave of Antonius. She gave me the name of a funeral home we had discussed previously; Burgar Funeral Home, Camrose. Telephone 780-672-2121. I called and spoke with Steve Haugen. We will send him an email to advise details of inscription on the stone and he will advise Ronald Susag the cost of making the monument and placing it in the cemetery.

Antonius married Ellen Kristine Gabriel Dtr. Gabrielsen on 14 Aug 1904 in Lutheran Church, Sargent County, North Dakota. Ellen was born in Oct 1875 in Of, ..Norway. She died on 28 Dec 1958 in New Norway, Alberta, Canada and was buried on 3 Jan 1959 in New Norway Cemetery, Alberta, Canada.
Ellen was naturalized in 1902 in Sargent County, North Dakota.
[1] No records available on parents. Naturalization records for ND show the following two men who obtained their papers in Sargent County and list "Norway" as country of origin: *Peder J. Gabrielson, 1st papers Dec 3, 1898 & 2nd papers June 7, 1904 *Simon Gabrielson, 2nd papers Oct 28, 1896, Sargent F-9, p. 125
[2] Census record 1900 Sparbu, Nord-Trondelag lists "Johannes Gabrielsen". This may be Ellen's father. A record of Elen Kristine Gabrielsdatter could not be found in the Norwegian Census records. The Sargent County, Ransom Township Census of 21 Apr 1910, lists "Ellen, wife of Anton Severtsen, age 33 or 35 (hard to read), born Norway, both parents born Norway. Reads/speaks Norwegian. Date of U.S. citizenship: 1902.
[3] Gabrielson: Country of origin: "Sweden" and Sargent County, ND: Johannes, Jakob, Henry, etc. [1910 Census record lists Ellen as a Norwegian.]
[4] Lloyd Susag's father, Sig Susag, told the family he had spoken to Ellen's relatives in Cayuga who told him Anton had died. That would have been 1937. Also, it indicates that Sig knew the family but Lloyd has no memory of ever meeting any of them.
[5]Records indicate she was buried in New Norway Cemetery 3 Jan 1959, 5th grave from NW 1/2 of #46. Her second husband, Arthur Bakke, buried 12 Aug 1959, 6th grave from NW 1/2 of # 46.
