Rubrics

Rubrics are a key aspect of my teaching effectiveness. Rather than viewing rubrics simply as a means of assigning a grade to an assignment, I approach them as tools that can convey key competencies and guide students in achieving them. For example, in the "organization" section of the rubric below, I remind students that the use of topic sentences and transitions are key elements in strongly organized and clear writing. Students can use the descriptive language in the rubric to reflect upon and evaluate their own work. With a detail rubric, students can better understand how they are being evaluated and how to improve their performance moving forward.
