Computing & IT prepares pupils to participate in our rapidly changing world. Pupils use IT to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination. It is increasingly important that all children learn how to design and create software as well as simply consume it. Computational thinking is a key part of the Computing curriculum and includes decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction and algorithms. To this end, we use the Scratch programming environment to teach basic programming concepts in a fun and engaging manner.

Key areas addressed include speaking and listening, reading (beginning with phonics instruction in the Pre-Prep) and writing. The English Department runs a weekly bookshop and hosts workshops by visiting authors. In recent years these have included Meg Rosoff, Alex Scarrow and Kevin Crossley-Holland.

To do this, pupils are equipped with all of the map reading and atlas skills that they need and are encouraged to develop their logical reasoning and thinking skills through various tasks and problem solving exercises. In every part of the school they are given the opportunity to undertake fieldwork, whether it is going to the East Kent Ploughing Match and Forest Park in the Pre-Prep, finding out about the local area in Year 5, visiting Greenwich Maritime Museum in Year 7 and carrying out local research investigations in Year 8.

In order to achieve these aims, all children receive a one hour mixed PE lesson each week, during which a variety of topics such as gymnastics, badminton, swimming and athletics are covered. In the afternoons, the boys and the girls separate for their Games sessions, where the major games are coached and teams prepare for their weekly matches. We have a full and active fixture list, with the majority of inter-school matches taking place on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

In Year 5 we investigate the cultural differences in our society by looking at four of the major world faiths: Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam. Where possible, we invite in speakers from those faiths. In Year 6 we study Judaism and some figures of the Old Testament who do not feature in the Common Entrance syllabus.

MOCA has given students funding to attend conferences, held study sessions for qualifying exams, and provided mentoring and networking opportunities by bringing mathematicians of color from various universities to present at Iowa State. The group also recruits students of color to Iowa State by hosting a Math Solve-a-thon event and reaching out to students of color majoring in mathematics at other schools during national conferences and events.

In a second NSF-funded project, Building on Strengths, Young is leading a team to develop the Mathematician Affiliates of Color Network, a nationwide network of professionals and academics in mathematics. The mathematicians in the network will serve as mentors to middle and high school students and work with teachers in local school districts to help prepare underrepresented students for college mathematics courses. Here in Ames, members of MOCA will serve as mentors in the Ames School District.

Young is a highly productive researcher in mathematics who sees mathematics as a social activity, a language that brings people together. His many areas of involvement to make mathematics education more accessible for underrepresented students demonstrates his commitment to that philosophy and his alignment with the community building principles of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Throughout high school, the SSMV students meet each week at Vanderbilt for an entire class day to participate in a research-based, hands-on, interdisciplinary curriculum. They learn from Vanderbilt instructors, collaborate on research projects and participate in prestigious national science and math competitions. There is also a summer component. Students graduate after four years, having earned seven honors elective course credits.

Cambridge is renowned for the excellence of its Mathematics course. Equally challenging and rewarding, it offers the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects: everything from abstract logic to black holes. Since Sir Isaac Newton was Lucasian Professor (1669-96), mathematics teaching and research here have been enhanced by a string of brilliant mathematicians, including six Fields Medallists and even Nobel Prize winners. During the first two years (Parts IA and IB) there are courses on a wide range of mathematics. In the latter part of the second year there are also some optional courses available. The third year (Part II) is a unified course with subjects available to those intending to pursue further study of maths and also subjects of a more general nature. The intention is to offer each student the opportunity to pick-and-mix, to choose a combination of courses tailored individually to their abilities and aspirations.

After completing the degree students enter a variety of professions. About one third of King's students do further work in Mathematics, often taking Part III of the Mathematical Tripos before doing research.

The differences between the colleges occur in the supervisions they offer. The norm is for each pair of students to have two one-hour sessions alone with a suitable teacher to sort out the new material and check the understanding of the old. Currently the maths teaching staff at King's consists of a Lecturer, a Reader and five Professors. In addition, we use the four King's Research Fellows and several excellent research students for specialist teaching.

There's a good sense of community amongst the Mathematicians at King's. The "mathmos" get to know each other well, and since everyone gets stuck sometimes, it is really useful to have other students being helpful as well as supervisors.

For students taking A-Levels, it is required that you are taking A-Level Mathematics and A-Level in Further Mathematics. We also require that you take the STEP paper - see below for more details. An A-Level in Physics can also be very helpful. If your school does not offer teaching for Further Mathematics, you may be able to get help from the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme and Integral. We have had successful applicants who started Further Mathematics at the end of year 12. You can find links to these programmes below.

For students who are taking the International Baccalaureate, Higher Level Mathematics is required, along with the STEP paper (see below). IB applicants starting the new IB Mathematics syllabus are expected to take IB Higher Level 'Analysis and Approaches'. Higher Level Physics is also recommended.
