Seeing Kimberly Akimbo Was an Emotional Surprise I’ll Never Forget

Seeing the touring production of Kimberly Akimbo at Baltimore’s historic Hippodrome Theatre in May 2026 was an experience that truly surprised me in the best possible way. After seeing some of the marketing, I was interested enough to want to go, but also a little skeptical about whether I would actually enjoy it. From the advertisements and clips, the production looked sweet and quirky, but much simpler than the big spectacle-style musicals we had seen recently like Back to the Future: The Musical and Wicked. Those shows wow audiences with massive sets, elaborate costumes, and jaw-dropping effects. Kimberly Akimbo did not appear to have that same larger-than-life feel. Wow was I happy we decided to see it.

What made this musical so fantastic was the story itself. Kimberly Akimbo proves that a great musical does not need endless spectacle to leave a lasting impression. The heart, humor, emotion, and characters carried the entire show. The simple staging actually made it easier to focus on the relationships at the center of the story, which is what made it feel so special.

The musical follows Kimberly, a bright and funny teenage girl living with an extremely rare condition that causes her body to age rapidly. She is trying to navigate the everyday struggles of being a teenager making friends, dealing with drama, and figuring out who she wants to be. We watch as she forms an friendship with a classmate named Seth while also dealing with the chaos of her dysfunctional family.

The story balances heartfelt emotional moments with humor in a way that feels natural rather than forced, making the audience laugh one minute and tear up the next. One of the things I appreciated most was how relatable and human it felt. Beneath the unusual premise is a story about wanting connection, happiness, and the chance to live life on your own terms. The show has so much warmth that by the end, I found myself far more emotionally invested than I ever expected. It’s the kind of musical that sneaks up on you quiet at first, but deeply powerful as it unfolds.

Throughout the performance, I kept getting waves of emotion. At first, I thought it might just be me, because I tend to be sentimental during emotional shows and movies. But then I looked over and saw my husband quietly wiping tears from his eyes too. As the show continued, I could hear sniffles throughout the audience and noticed others around us tearing up. This story was connecting with so many people in the theater.

Now, while the story certainly has heartbreaking moments, especially knowing Kimberly is facing the reality of a shortened life, the show never stays heavy for too long. Almost every emotional moment is balanced with humor, awkward teenage situations, or chaotic family dynamics that bring the audience back up again. That emotional balance is honestly one of the things that makes it work so beautifully. I was nervous it might end in an overwhelmingly sad way, but instead I found myself crying in a completely different way by the finale—hopeful, inspired, and deeply moved.

The song “Great Adventure” especially captures the heart of the musical. One lyric that stayed with me was:

“You never know, and nor do I, when we will have to say goodbye. So just enjoy the time, because no one gets a second time.”

That moment hits even harder after following Kimberly’s journey. By the end, the message feels less about sadness and more about appreciating the people, moments, and experiences that make life meaningful even when life is messy, uncertain, and far too short.

Overall, I absolutely loved Kimberly Akimbo and would highly recommend seeing it if you have the chance. It is one of those rare musicals that manages to be funny, emotional, heartfelt, and inspiring all at once. It's incredible storytelling and unforgettable characters. Long after leaving the theatre, I was still thinking about its message and the emotions it brought out.

I especially think teenagers and adults would connect with this musical. Teens will likely relate to the awkwardness, friendships, first love, and figuring-out-life moments throughout the story. Parents and adults may connect even more deeply with the themes about time, family, growing older, and appreciating life while we have it. That said, parents should be aware there is some cussing and a few adult themes woven into the story, so it may not be ideal for younger children.

There was also something really nostalgic about the time period the show evokes. Since it’s set in the 1990s, the music, dancing, and costumes gave me a fun flashback to that era back when I was also around Kimberly’s age. I actually had a jean dress just like the one she wore, and I remember pairing it with a very similar green and white striped shirt underneath just like Kimberly wears. Seeing those details on stage brought back a surprising wave of nostalgia I wasn’t expecting, like stepping back in time

Kimberly Akimbo ended up being far more meaningful and memorable than I ever expected, and it’s definitely a show I will continue recommending to others.
