Hi, I'm just sorting out my bathroom ceiling where some paint has been peeling off above the shower. I've scraped off the peeling paint and will be sealing it. Do I need to then put a layer of filler over the area (which is quite big) before putting the top coat on? I've seen one video on youtube where a decorator did put filler on and another where he didn't.

Damp and mould can affect any property, especially as cold weather sets in. Apart from being unsightly, they can cause health issues if left untreated. Luckily, you can tackle damp and mould effectively with anti-mould products, including paints, primers, mould remover treatments and specialist cleaners.

Before you start painting, remove any damp or mould and clean the area to prevent it from reappearing. We recommend wearing PPE, like masks, goggles and gloves when treating damp and mould, as they can cause irritation. Follow these steps to learn how to treat damp walls before painting.

The first step is to create a clean and dry surface, ensuring any primers or paints you apply will adhere to the surface. Take a wire brush and remove as much organic matter as possible, including peeling paint. Exterior walls and wood can be treated with Dulux Trade Weathershield Multi-Surface Wash, suitable for painted and untreated wood or masonry.

If the mould has rotted the plaster, causing cracks or holes, fill them in before you paint. Browse our full range of fillers to find the right products for the job. Once the filler has dried, use a fine abrasive paper to smooth the surface ready for priming. Primer will ensure the area is sealed, making it easier to cover up discolouration and helping the paint adhere better.

Dulux Trade Mouldshield Fungicidal Matt is designed for indoor walls and ceilings affected by mould or damp. This durable, water-based paint contains antifungal chemicals to keep mould at bay, providing high-quality, long-lasting results.

For outdoor applications, use Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior High Gloss. Offering up to eight years of weather protection, this paint is formulated with a fungicide to inhibit mould growth on outdoor trim like gutters, pipes and primed metal. Explore the full Weathershield range to find anti-mould masonry paint, exterior woodcare products and more.

Next, apply an oil-based paint or undercoat, like Dulux Trade Undercoat, to improve retention and increase opacity. This step is crucial if the area is stained or discoloured, as it will help to hide these marks.

Here is an easy method to determine the location of live wires, with a stud finder. I have a stud finder on which there is no means to adjust the sensitivity of the live wire detector. However, you may use paper for the same purpose. Stud finder is sensitive to the electric field; electric field depends on the distance (i.e. how far you are from the live wire) and the medium (i.e. the material between you and wire (air or other material). If you put some paper between the stud finder and the wall you decrease the sensitivity of the stud finder. I use phone book pages for this purpose (they are free and you may add as many pages as needed). The thickness of the pages may go from one page to 1 centimeter or more depending on the current in the wire, and the paint used on the wall. You will see that the stud finder sounds for electricity only when it comes on top of the wire; you can pinpoint the location of the wire exactly. I hope this info helps someone. Good luck.

It's best to do a visible inspection. Just cut a small hole at the level of a normal power outlet and use a flash light and mirror to look up in the cavity wall. After the inspection, either patch the wall/paint or just install a blank plate over the hole. If you don't have a mirror, a camera phone with a flash works pretty well.

NOTE: Most painting contractors order 1/8" thick material if they plan on reusing the stencil for years. The 1/16" is fine for occasional use. Both are great products that have been in the field for years.

While using MacPaint that year, his then-three-year-old son expressed a desire to use the application. Hickman noted how quickly he adapted to the use of the mouse and keyboard, but also that he inadvertently activated pop-up menus and other user interface elements. It was this experience that encouraged Hickman to write a simple paint program for his son to use; he also decided to make this freely available.[2] 0852c4b9a8
