The Department of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is home to a diverse range of conceptual and material approaches. It is an open, pluralistic community with a primary emphasis on experimental consideration for painting and drawing in the 21st century.

Diverse and dedicated faculty, consisting of more than 70 working artists whose work appears in galleries and museums across the globe. Collectively their various practices embody a wide array of conceptual and material models for painting and drawing.

The painting and drawing programs were the first in the nation to hire artists as teachers, based on their professional record. Six regular faculty members, one lecturer, and recurring visiting faculty teach drawing and painting classes at all levels. The current faculty is diverse and exhibits regularly and widely, including venues in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, St, Louis, Cincinnati, Atlanta, and New Orleans. Nationally and internationally renowned artists are invited to the School each year to lecture, present their work, and critique student work.

Within the painting/drawing program, students emphasize one of four areas: drawing, watermedia, painting, or printmaking. In their senior year, B.F.A. students receive one-on-one instruction from the professor of their choice. Students explore their personal artistic identity while learning the rigor and attention to detail needed to put together a solo exhibition as their culminating experience.

The dynamic relationship between paintingand drawing forms the core of the BFA program. Our curriculum encourages a balance of technical proficiency and creative exploration with a wide range of subjects, materials, and formats. Emphasis is placed on conceptualization and process, as well as finished products. Initial focus on technique and tradition evolves into an increasing concern with content, experimental approaches, and contemporary issues.

The undergraduate painting and drawing facilities at the Broad Art Center consist of five spacious studio classrooms with natural and artificial lighting and spectacular views of Los Angeles. The two Advanced Painting studios are divided into individual work spaces, providing upper-division undergraduates with an opportunity to work in their own studio spaces for an entire quarter. Six individual senior studio spaces are also awarded annually by a portfolio review. Facilities include a library, a Wood Shop for building stretcher bars, and a Printmaking Studio.

The painting and drawing area of study provides a foundation in the methods and materials of traditional media and supports advanced work that reflects the vitality and breadth of contemporary practice.

This introductory course provides a basic foundation in the methods and materials of painting, including: A basic understanding of painting tools, various supports, pigment and media, color theory, color mixing and various opaque and transparent processes. Professors support the studio experience with lectures, slides, handouts and/or textbooks. While the faculty provides a foundation of historical perspective, they encourage students to develop individual creative directions and explore the position that painting occupies in contemporary art.

This multi-level course combines the second, third, fourth and fifth levels of painting. Students in this course are encouraged to develop and refine their individual and conceptual technical directions. The faculty emphasizes a contemporary context by providing examples, references and personal experiences. Direct experience of historical and contemporary works at museums and galleries is an important component of this course. Note: This course is often more specifically subtitled.

At the same time, students have the chance to develop approaches to their work that are not defined by traditional parameters of painting or drawing. Students in many of our classes incorporate new technologies, moving image, photography, installation, language, literature, and architecture in their explorations of problems presented.

The program encourages a wide spectrum of innovative approaches to contemporary drawing. Working from a variety of sources and subjects, students develop technical proficiency experimenting with a wide range of materials and processes. In addition, students develop the ability to critically assess imagery through written and verbal analysis. In the program's final year, students create a body of work with an individualized approach to form and content, culminating in a senior exhibition.

The painting and drawing area emphasizes the broad range of practices currently available to artists. Contemporary painting, life drawing, figurative painting, and specialized courses in narrative drawing and drawing for animators are among the many offerings in this area.

Anatomical or life drawing and painting courses function as a transition from an emphasis on technique to one on conceptual skills, with compositional, gestural, and interpretive elements. Advanced courses develop knowledge of composition, scale, and spatial perception; to gain knowledge in the theoretical and practical aspects of color and its application. Advanced courses yield a body of work that reveal personal expression, create awareness and raise questions about conceptual and perceptual processes.

Students working towards a Studio Arts degree can select drawing or painting as their area of emphasis. The diverse faculty in the Drawing and Painting Area are working contemporary artists whose professional practices operate within the tradition while, at the same time, challenging the boundaries of drawing and painting.

The area also offers a concentrated degree in drawing and painting in the form of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). This is a highly competitive degree and students must apply to the BFA program with a portfolio that displays a unique vision, internal drive, and advanced understanding of practice that sets them apart from the average studio arts major. Once accepted into the BFA program, students will be expected to develop technical proficiency in their media, engage in a critical dialog with their peers, investigate the conceptual underpinning of their own ideas and interests, and work closely with the full-time faculty. Every BFA student will be assigned a faculty mentor. This degree is intended for students that believe they want to be a professional in the arts community.

I am currently working on a new body of work called "Picaninny 1976." My mother is white and my biological father is black. I make work about race and identity that primarily focuses on exploring this "in between" space. My mother's parents grew up in Mississippi and when my grandfather first met me he said, "Where is that little picaninny?" I am painting images of myself as a child and inserting crocodile/alligator imagery. The pairing of black children and alligators is common within racist memorabilia in the United States. These images were ubiquitous around America but especially around the gulf states. I am interested in the word picaninny; its historical context; this particular personal narrative within my family; and the implications of violence or erasure of black bodies within this imagery.

The Painting and Drawing Society is for museum members who are interested in European and American old master and early modern paintings and drawings (before 1960). Our aim is to educate members, encourage collecting, and support the growth of the painting and drawing collections of the museum. The society offers lectures, educational programs, special tours of museum exhibitions, and trips to galleries, exhibitions, and private collections in other cities.

The program is housed in the Mundelein Center at the Lakeshore Campus. The facilities feature recently renovated studio spaces for beginning drawing and painting, a separate studio for intermediate and advanced drawing and painting, and a printmaking studio.

Each entry requires four images of your piece. Showcase the scale and details of your work and include pictures from different angles. For 2D works, show your plans in detail. You may choose to include concept drawings, sketches, material palettes, sections, elevations, site plans and renderings in your image selection. For 3D works, include one image that shows the work from the front at a slight angle against a white or neutral colored background. Art that is composed of marks made with dry materials on a 2D surface. Drawings include all renderings made by a manual or mechanical instrument on a surface and may include formal, realistic, and/or abstract imagery. Illustrations made with dry materials should be entered in this category. Illustrations made with paint should be entered in Painting and illustrations made digitally should be entered in Digital Art. Ink drawings colored with paint like watercolors should be entered in Drawing & Illustration.

The Painting and Drawing program supports the investigation of various methods, forms and histories of painting and drawing in addition to the spaces these modes occupy in the contemporary sphere. Students begin their studies with a thorough grounding in the skills required to successfully engage the traditions and contemporary practices of painting and drawing. Initial coursework provides students strong technical, perceptual and visualization skills through a comprehensive and rigorous Foundations and Studio Core curriculum; gaining material handling competencies of both painting and drawing media. Intermediate coursework includes a review and expansion of these competencies with exploration into the expressive potential of painting and drawing through thematically-driven projects.
