The JET program is an amazing program that provides students with the ability to gain experience working in a country that is possibly different than where they currently reside. I believe that it is important to learn and experience a culture firsthand and to expand your knowledge of the world by doing so. A part of why I really want to apply for this job is due to the fact that I have never had many chances to experience countries or cultures outside of the United States. By living in Japan, I would get to experience the day to day life of being a citizen of Japan and being a part of the community. If I was presented with the honor of receiving this job, I would work to always be a positive influence on the community and to always responsibly impact others around me.
I am interested in the program because I think I can gain a vast amount of experience from it. A goal of mine has always been to get a job where I’ll be able to help others in some form, and being an assistant English teacher seems like a fun and exciting opportunity to pursue that objective. This type of job would allow me to gain experience in planning lessons that are fun and memorable and allow me to learn tips for teaching students successfully. I would also be a great candidate due to previous experience being an assistant teacher in music classes. In high school, I used to assist in teaching choral parts to the soprano section and would be in charge of the group for the remainder of class. I have also assisted in teaching middle and high schoolers in learning to read sheet music and play piano. I would be a good candidate because I would be willing and excited to be working with elementary through high school students. Getting to teach various ages would also prepare me for the diverse differences there are between elementary and high school students.
I would be an excellent addition to the JET Program due to my English major and concentration in that major. Having a concentration in theory and criticism will help due to having experience looking closely at English text and grammar. I would also have considerable knowledge in how to structure an essay due to having to constantly write essays for my major. Through years of writing and having my writing analyzed, I have learned even more about how to improve my writing and grammar. Another reason I would be a beneficial addition to the program is due to my experience with the Japanese language. At Drake University, I have been taking classes to learn Japanese. If I were to be accepted in the position, I would be able to understand many phrases and be able to use what I have learned to communicate a bit in Japanese and be able to read Japanese text. Due to various jobs, I also have a vast amount of experience in customer service. From my second year of high school to this year, I have worked at a grocery store back home. Being in this line of work for around six or seven years has helped me be able to adequately aid and converse with customers. Even working at Event Staff and Cowles Library at Drake University has helped me to improve and increase these skills. One reason why I would be beneficial to the program is due to me being a passionate and hard worker. I was raised by the ideal that you have to work hard in order to achieve your goals. In my life, I have always been dedicated to my work and have never given up, even if the situation looks bleak. I always try to be polite to every person, follow directions, and try to have a positive outlook on life. In any situation, I am determined to do my best and am constantly eager to learn different and new concepts.
