Focus of Revision: Grammar, sentence structure, and flow. I worked with Tessa to make sure that we would stay within the 2-page limit. I offered places where she could expand on her meaning or her abilities.
The reason why I am applying to the JET program is due to it being an amazing opportunity to travel away from your own country and be able to experience a different culture. The JET program seems to be an amazing program that provides students with the ability to gain experience working in a country that is possibly different than the one they live in. I am interested in the program because I think I can gain a vast amount of experience from it. Being an assistant teacher in English seems as if it would be very exciting and fun. One of my future goals in life has always been to get a job where in some form, I will be able to help others. I wanted to apply for this job because I think it would be enjoyable to assist in teaching others a new or different language. I am also very interested in learning about a culture I have never experienced before. Through movies, YouTube vlogs, and shows, I have witnessed a bit of Japan’s culture, but I would like to be able to experience and learn more about Japan by personally living there. Experiencing the culture firsthand is very different from watching videos, and I know I would gain a lot of knowledge from the experience. By getting to work and live in Japan, I strive to have a positive impact on the community and its members. I hope to show how dedicated I am as an employee and how I strive to be an exemplary citizen.
I would be excellent for the JET Program due to my English major. Due to the extensive time I have put into my major, I would already be very familiar with English grammar and pronunciation. Due to the classes I have taken, I would also have considerable knowledge in how to structure an essay. I also possess teaching experience that would be useful to the job of assistant teacher. In high school, I used to assist in teaching choral parts to the soprano section and would be in charge of that group for the rest of the class period. I have also helped assist a variation of age ranges in learning to read sheet music and play piano. In band, I was also chair leader of the Saxophone section and used to aid others in learning sections of sheet music.
Another reason I would be a beneficial addition to the program is due to my experience with the Japanese language. At Drake University, I have been taking classes to learn Japanese. If I were to be accepted in the position, I would be able to understand many phrases and be able to use what I have learned to communicate a bit in Japanese and be able to read Japanese text. Due to various jobs, I also have a vast amount of experience in customer service. From my second year of high school to this year, I have worked at a grocery store back home. Being in this line of work for around six or seven years has helped me be able to adequately aid and converse with customers. Even working at Event Staff and Cowles Library has helped me gain even more customer service experience and be able to work well alongside others. One reason why I would be beneficial to the program is due to me being a passionate and hard worker. I was raised by the ideal that you have to work hard in order to achieve your goals. In my life, I have always been dedicated to my work and have never given up, even if the situation looks bleak. I always try to be polite to every person, follow directions, and always try to have a positive outlook in life. In any situation, I am determined to do my best and am constantly eager to learn different and new concepts. Due to taking a traveling J-term course, I will also possess experience in being able to adapt to a different atmosphere in a short amount of time.
