Autobiography
When I was ten, I got a piano for Christmas and started lessons after many years of begging for them.
At twelve I was begging my parents to quit, but by fourteen I knew I wanted to be a musician. Why? I
started lessons with a teacher who was filled with a passion for music, I started playing piano for my church and the use of my skills was fulfilling, and I found friends that also played piano and and that social support encouraged me to stick with it.
I worked through the ten levels of the OMTA Syllabus, was accepted into the Piano Performance
program at the University of Oregon and received full scholarships. I studied classical piano, jazz
piano, voice, choral directing, composition, harpsichord and organ. I studied the organ with the renowned performer and pedagogue, Barbara Baird for three years and I earned my Bachelor of Music Performance, specializing in the Organ in 2005. I was a music ministry intern with the recording artist Julia Brown following my graduation. Then I discovered that I truly loved teaching, and I started teaching full time, but I never stopped working in music ministry. I have four children, and I love animals, hiking, reading and writing.
My Teaching Philosophy
The goal I have for my students is that they will fall in love with making music and have the freedom to do whatever they want with music through a well-rounded education. I understand that each student’s learning style and interests are different, and I respect my students’ needs. I try to make lessons fun yet challenging and teach the art of self-discipline with grace.
Opportunities for Students
Through the Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA) students can be a part of recitals, competitions, composition workshops, and syllabus evaluations. I recommend the Syllabus program to many piano students because it provides evaluation in music theory, ear training, and musical literature. Through Harmony Roadhouse Music Studios students can perform in concerts in which students play with teachers or with other students to form a small band.
Hybrid Lessons:
I offer private 1:1 piano and voice lessons that are online most weeks, but we meet in-person before recitals or evaluations three times a year.
Group Lessons:
I offer online group classes that focus on singing and piano. Group lessons are paid for by term. Students in the group receive instructional videos and assignments through Google Classroom that they can take at their own pace, they can join two group classes per week to work together and have all their questions answered, and best of all they will get lots of support from me and the team any time.
Group Lesson Offerings:
Group Piano Lessons: have fun learning as a team and playing with friends. You will learn rhythm, note reading, music theory, technique, improvisation, and pieces in a variety of styles. Your team gets to choose songs that you'll learn and you get lots of opportunities to play duets and in ensemble. Check with me for current levels offered and times offered.
Group Voice Lessons: have fun learning as a group. You'll learn classic vocal technique with science and effective analogies, ear training, harmony, expression and developing your style. You'll have lots of opportunities to sing in harmony and develop your confidence. You'll choose what songs you want to work on.
Keys for Singing: piano lessons focused on supporting your singing and songwriting and accompanying vocals (great for worship team keyboardists). Learn to play vocal exercises, learn how to read notation and sing along with it, learn to play chords, and learn a variety of accompaniment styles so you can create your own beautiful accompaniments while you sing. Students will have fun working together and get to choose their songs.
Rates for online group lessons:
8 week course (including video lessons and meeting twice a week): $280
-Practicing Musicians Club:
This is for intermediate to advanced musicians who want to have accountability for their practice and purpose to their practice. All participants will be expected to perform or submit recordings to the group regularly. All participants will be graded on the practice journal they submit and on their participation during classes. The online group class sessions will include performances, music theory games, ear training games, inspirational lessons about other musicians/music history, lessons in Alexander Technique applied to music, and question and answer times. Students will be encouraged to submit recordings along with their music for me to evaluate. Members of the club don't have to be studying under a teacher, but it may also complement their study with a teacher. Students will be encouraged to work on duets together (yes, it's definitely possible online or even over the phone!). Inquire about class times/availability. Classes twice a week: $80/month
Policies
Rates for hybrid lessons:
$30 for 30 minutes
$45 for 45 minutes
$60 for 60 minutes
How to choose the right length of lesson:
The length of weekly lessons depends on the student’s attention span and practice time. Daily practice time should match the length of the lessons.
Lesson Expectations:
Students should come to lessons with their music and a practice notebook or binder. Students should be honest with their teacher, open to trying new things, and should stay on task.
Cancellations:
Please plan appointments and activities around lesson times. If a student needs to cancel or
reschedule a lesson, please provide as much notice as possible. Except for emergencies, 24-hour notice should be given. Only one lesson may be canceled without charge per month except in extreme circumstances.
Your teacher will give as much notice as possible if it's necessary to reschedule or cancel a lesson.
Lessons canceled by the teacher will be credited for the following month if payment is made at the beginning of the month.
Payment:
Students pay at the beginning of each month. If they have not paid by the end of the month,
students or parents of students will receive an email invoice. Cash, check, Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle are all accepted forms of payment.
Testimonials:
"Katie is the best teacher ever! She is very caring, helpful, and there's no reason to be nervous around her. I was having trouble with breathing before, but she really helped!"
-Mary Jane
"Lessons with Katie are amazing. I used to struggle with a break into my high range, but now I have a good mix where my break used to be and I have the biggest vocal range in my group now." -Aiden
