I am a still photographer, videographer, sculptor and painter and a full time student at the University of Minnesota. During the last eight years I have interviewed, video recorded, and photographed hundreds of World War II veterans, along with their personal documents such as diaries and photos, in order to preserve their stories for future generations. The resulting videos are edited by me and put up on my YouTube channel, then posted on my Eighth Air Force Historical Society of Minnesota’s Presentations website. Interviews are later typed up and DVD copies of the videos are given to the veteran. In addition to videography and documentary still photography, I also occasionally will create a painting of an Air Force veteran’s specific aircraft.
I enjoy shooting night cityscapes, personal portraits, and local festivals, and I usually carry a Canon Vixia HF R400 video camera and a Nikon D3400 still and video camera with me. These still photographs are available on my “Kevin L. Callahan Photographer” Facebook page.
I fabricate metal and wood sculptures and installations and produce artworks about climate change and Franklin Roosevelt’s ideal of universal “Freedom from want.” My sculptures incorporate photos, imagery, and objects from the 1930s and 1940s such as old radios, records, and memories described by veterans and older family members who survived the Great Depression and World War II.
In the future I will be working on public sculptures and installations to be incorporated into a housing project at the historic Bunge grain elevator site in southeast Minneapolis, which was originally built in 1936 and operated until 2003.
Here is a list of the art and art-related classes I have taken at the University of Minnesota.
