Apprenticeships

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a type of employment where you learn, gain experience and get paid, all at the same time. You’re an employee with a contract of employment and holiday leave. By the end of an apprenticeship, you'll have the right skills and knowledge needed for your chosen career.

It can take between 1 and 6 years to complete an apprenticeship depending on which one you choose, what level it is and your previous experience. It’s funded from contributions made by the government and your employer. Apprenticeships involve working full time and completing a high level of study, in many ways apprenticeships are the more difficult option to move on to post 16 & post 18.

Levels of Apprenticeships

There are different levels of apprenticeships and you can start one at any level. Depending on the level of your apprenticeship, they may ask that you have certain qualifications such as GCSE Maths or English for example.

So what are the levels and what are they equivalent to?

  • Intermediate Apprenticeship is a Level 2 and equivalent to a GCSE

  • Advance Apprenticeship is a Level 3 and equivalent to an A-level

  • Higher Apprenticeship is Level 4,5,6 and 7 and equivalent to a Foundation Degree and above

  • Degree apprenticeship is a level 6 & 7 and equivalent to a Bachelor’s or Master's Degree

Finding an Apprenticeship

There are a number of ways you can find an apprenticeship, from the Gov. Website, College websites and on the companies websites themselves.

In the first instance, check the National Apprenticeship Website via the Gov.uk website (below) as you can filter by location, postcode and sector for example.
