Wilson disease is named after Samuel Alexander Kinnier Wilson (1878–1937), an American-born British neurologist. He described the condition in detail in 1912 in his postgraduate MD thesis at the University of Edinburgh, which was subsequently published in the journal Brain. He titled the paper "Progressive lenticular degeneration: a familial nervous disease associated with cirrhosis of the liver", establishing the link between the neurological symptoms and hepatic pathology.
