I wanted to tell a story about growing up. I felt that the theme growing up is important because the concepts are universal but the experiences are unique to each individual. I focused on the concepts such as closing the chapter of childhood, having insecurities, emotional instability, and reflecting upon meaningful past experiences because I thought these would be most ubiquitous and because they are personal to me. Furthermore, I intended this body of work to feel relatable and reflective. I wanted the audience to feel a sense of self-realization through relatability and understand the importance of meaningful experiences in shaping who we are today. With these two effects on the audience, I hope individuals would take time to know themselves on a much deeper level. Whether or not it may be important to you, it is something relevant I think about when navigating my way through life.

End if the first piece to the quadfecta of artworks relating to the theme of growing up. This first artwork showcases an introduction to teenage years. Using books as a symbol transcends the saying "closing a chapter" into something literal. Each person will have to close a chapter in life- childhood- and open a new one- teenage years. Inspired by the ending scene of Mob Psycho 100, created by Miyo Sato, I applied the technique, paint-on-glass, to create this piece. All drawings were self-made.
Checkmate

Checkmate deals with insecurities. Alluding to chess and solitaire, being insecure and having insecurities is similar to a battle against both society and yourself. Chess is won if the opponent loses and solitaire is won if an individual wins against themselves. Individuals claim victory over insecurities once they overcome societal pressures and make progress within themselves. And if an individual loses the battle then checkmate. All objects are self-made but the cards were purchased.
Instability

Instability refers to emotional instability, an aspect of growing up that is often the hardest to handle but is taken least into consideration. Society would ignorantly label these as "being moody" or "having mood swings". This lack of understanding made me disappointed because stereotypical labels are slapped onto these feelings instead of thoughtfulness. Inspired by Scott Bergey's stylistic elements, I hope to translate polar or nuanced emotions into something visual. All drawings were self-made.
Retrospect

Retrospect exudes the message that experiences an individual goes though when growing up shapes them into who they are today. The mirror literally provides the audience space to reflect upon themselves and questions on the mirror provokes thought. Through this piece I would like to encourage the audience to look back in retrospect about how they go to the the people they are today. The mirror is a found object that was purchased.
