Born and raised into a Balinese family, culture and traditions have always held meaning to me. The virtue of my Balinese roots has helped me grow as an individual. These values I hold continue to empower me every day as I look upon the strong Balinese women in my family that inspire me. As I highly value women’s empowerment, I realized that today’s society has failed to give women the same rights and opportunities as men. We live in a patriarchy where women are often mistreated. Another concern that I want to shed light on is the poverty issue in Indonesia, especially during this pandemic, many people are struggling to fulfill their primary needs. Hence, my exhibition will showcase my perspectives on these issues through Bali’s unique essence and culture while also expressing my emotions towards some moments and people in my life that has inspired me to grow as an individual.

I have always thought my Grandpa and my Grandma had a beautiful relationship which has inspired me to make this artwork that portrays their love story from the moment they met to the day my Grandpa passed away where my Grandma had part ways with my Grandpa. “Hingga Maut Memisahkan” is a translation of “Till’ Death Do Us Part” as their love for one another was unconditional and everlasting.

Congklak is a traditional Indonesian game where the player with the most shells in their hole will win. This game interprets the political system in Indonesia as the representatives of the people in this country tend to be greedy for their own wealth. The pink shells in the first board represent how the system should be where all the money should be distributed equally all over Indonesia.Whereas, in the second and third board, it shows the reality of the political system in Indonesia.

This artwork is dedicated to my Grandpa and the things that were very meaningful in his life. The background of the artwork is a sunset and the sea while he is wearing a navy uniform because he had served the navy army in Bali for most of his life. The painting of a heart that is attached to the right side of his chest symbolizes where his passion lies which is the sea and it also represents how me and my family had sent away his ashes in the sea when he passed away.

It is very unfortunate that sexual harassment cases towards women continue to increase every year, which is why I decided to create a modern art form that can empower women as I believe women have so much potential in building this modern world. Sexual harassment is not tolerable in any way, thus it is necessary for us to remind ourselves and the people around us to break their silence and treat all women the same without acknowledging who or where they come from.
