Our mobile devices give us access to the internet and our social media. It can be useful but in a way destroys us silently. Through the combination of clay and wire, I would like to portray how impactful our devices are through the words that I shaped in the wire such as evil, fake, hoax and lies. The words themselves are seen to be stabbing the tablet as it reveals the bitter truth about the gadgets we use.

Inspired by the media filters, this artwork showcases on how raw news is edited in order to fit a certain perspective. As seen above on how there are 4 different layers. The first layer which is a mask shows the raw news. Due to the current pandemic, I would like to keep it relevant which is why I used a mask to portray that there is a virus spreading around us. The second layer which is essentially a TV error, shows how the raw news is blocked and not seen which leads to the third layer. The third layer itself is the edited news, the news that is shaped based on what the person in charge would like to convey. The fourth and final layer, which is just the news headline, shows the hoax that is being spread. Through this artwork, I would like to showcase how the news that we read is not always true, it can be edited or exaggerated to fit into the perspective of the person in charge.

Hypnopedia

Hypnopedia also known as sleep-learning, is when an individual hears an audio recording of something while sleeping. It is believed that they could remember and unconsciously act accordingly to the recording. This concept was from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. The words that are written throughout the artwork is essentially what the media is trying to hypnotise us in the way we behave and believe. Example would be to believe in hoaxes and fake news.

Addiction to social media is a fatal thing. Recently, I discovered my daily screen time to be up to 9 hours which is a scary fact to me. Through this piece, I would like to show how we are glued to our phones and are constantly holding it. When our phone's battery dies, we have nothing, we feel lost as it is the only entertaining object to us. Inspired by the use of colours in Euphoria, I decided to incorporate it in my piece. The colour on top represents the battery percentage of the phone as for the colours on the left and right, it represents what social media I am in. I used 3 social medias here which are Instagram, Whatsapp and Twitter.

Now You See Me

Ever since social media emerged, we are always so obsessed with the amount of likes, followers and comments that we get. In a way, the amount of likes that we receive from our post, defines us. Seen in the artwork that there is one eye that is closed and the other is opened. The closed one represents how people are not noticing as this account only receives 1 or 2 likes. On the other hand, the eye that is opened shows an account that is "seen" by the public. An account with a large amount of following and receives a lot attention which is why it is opened.

Injustice in Social Media

Enraged by the actions of a lot of influencers by not following health protocols, wearing a mask when going out as well as not social distancing, inspired me to create this piece. Social influencers have such a big platform and could influence their followers. By promoting ludicrous actions such as travelling during the middle of the pandemic is definitely a bad influence. These influencers receive such a big attention but the health workers are underlooked and underappreciated.

Submission to Hatred

I recently released on how one comment could affect an individual tremendously whether it is a positive or hate comment. Social media can be a positive and supportive place where strangers could comfort us and give us confidence but a single hate comment could ruin everything. This piece shows the effect that it has towards an individual's state of mind and mental health. There are a variety of hate comments such as body shaming, the use of slurs, derogatory sentences, sexualising/ explicit comments and more. As seen on the images above there are red and yellow yarns attached to the sculpture. The red yarns symbolise the hate comments and the yellow for positive comments.

Imprisoned Thoughts

By now everyone should know the damages that social media has towards us users. Throughout my artworks it can be seen on how it affects the way we behave, think, believe and feel. People have different opinions on the negative side of social media and I would like to voice out their opinions through this piece. Inspired by the mugshot challenge in Tik Tok, I connected the thoughts as something that is forbidden, something that should be "imprisoned." As I pinned each mugshot and connected them with a red yarn, this is essentially like a crime scene investigation, where a crime has been committed. The red yarns itself form into a brain which is where our thoughts come from.
