Measurement of the Minimal Oxygen Concentration to Promote Candle-Like Combustion of Polymers using the Oxygen Index The goal of ASTM D2863 is to determine the lowest oxygen concentration required to sustain a flame burn on a plastic specimen in an oxygen/nitrogen mixture. There is no correlation with actual end-use conditions.

In a glass chimney that is vertically positioned over the test sample, an oxygen and nitrogen flow is produced by starting at the bottom of the chimney. The top edge of the test sample is lit, and when the flow's oxygen content decreases, the flame ultimately goes out.

Dimensions of the test specimen: There are six specifications for the test specimen, depending on the type of material being tested.
