Image Series

Single Semester Project

Create a sequence of illustrations for use in Books, Retail Products, Editorials, Marketing Art, Game Concept Design or Storyboarding. The images can be completed with any production method: 2D or 3D and any software.

Deliverables

  • Project definition documentation
  • Benchmarks
  • 5-10 development sketches.
  • 4-10 storyboards or game-play diagrams
  • 3-6 developed characters with props
  • 2-4 scenes or levels
  • Pitch Document (PDF, Google Doc or Other)

First Review: Project Definition

1 - 2 Sentence Log Line That Includes:

  • genre
  • target audience
  • delivery system
  • objective
  • emotional connection

Example log line: "In this Storybook Tablet App, three road construction toys, just children themselves, come to life and help each other work through typical emotional trials and tribulations. We aim to teach kids, ages 3-6, how to understand their emotions and move past feelings like frustration and anger to feelings of joy, laughter and purpose."

For Function

  • List at least 3 benchmarks for great story, gameplay or themes that are similar to yours - screen shots with links
  • Create a Very Short Outline that includes:
    • For Storyboarding;
      • Protagonists, Antagonists & World
      • Story arc
    • For Game Concepts;
      • Gameplay Description
      • Camera angle
      • Type (2D?, 3D. shooter, adventure, etc?)
    • For Animation Concepts;
      • Type (2D, 3D)
      • Length
      • Distribution (feature, short, YouTube)
    • For Books, Retail, Editorial & Marketing Art;
      • The theme or subject that will drive the content and style
      • Production methods

For Brand

  • Perform a differentiation search and list at least 3 benchmarks that are brand leaders in your conceptual space. -screen shots with links
  • Describe how you will differentiate your concept and make it memorable

For Aesthetics

  • list at least 3 benchmarks utilizing designs that will create similar emotions - screen shots with links
  • For Game Concepts & Storyboarding: Create 2-4 composite layout sketches that includes characters, props and environment.
  • For Books, Retail, Editorial & Marketing Art: Create 2-4 sketches that will provide an overview of the visual direction.
  • Number each sketch
  • Draw in correct format (ratio)

Second Review: Visual Development

Animation Concept Design

  • 3 - 5 concept development sketches for each of 3-6 characters
    • Reference Archetype, Stereotype, Persona guide on the DLC
  • 1 concept development sketch for 2-3 scenes (draw in correct format (ratio)
    • Ref. Scene Design Guide on DLC
  • Number each sketch

Game Concept Design

  • 3 - 5 concept development sketches for each of 2-6 characters
    • Reference Archetype, Stereotype, Persona guide on the DLC
  • 1 concept development sketch for 1-3 environments (levels) (draw in correct format (ratio)
    • Ref. Scene Design Guide on DLC
  • 2 - 4 concept development sketches for 3-5 major props
  • Number each sketch

For Books, Retail, Editorial, Marketing Art

  • 3 - 5 concept development sketches for each illustration or product
  • Number each sketch
  • Draw in correct format (ratio)

Third Review: Finished Work

Animation Concept Design

  • Color illustrations for 3-6 characters (include bio) (draw them in poses that will fit in the environments)

Game Concept Design

  • Color illustrations for 3-6 characters (include bio). They should be in game-play-environment view.

Storyboarding

  • 1/3 of the storyboards
  • Include dialogue and sound design notes
  • Draw in correct format (ratio)

For Books, Retail, Editorial, Marketing Art, Production Art

  • 1/3 of the fully rendered images

Add Committee Notes To Journal (Options Below)

  • allow them to edit your document directly
  • write your own notes based on their verbal feedback
  • copy and paste notes from email or other correspondence
  • include any visual image mark-ups (place them directly in the document)

Fourth Review: Finished Work

Animation Concept Design

  • Color illustrations each for 2-3 scenes (include descriptions)

Game Concept Design

  • Color illustrations each for 3-5 major props (include descriptions)(include props that will fit in the environments)

Storyboarding

  • next 1/3 of the storyboards
  • Include dialogue and sound design notes
  • Draw in correct format (ratio)

For Books, Retail, Editorial, Marketing Art, Production Art

  • next 1/3 of the fully rendered images

  • last 1/3 of the fully rendered images
