The Admiral of the Fleet, is the highest rank of the Imperial Yatanese Navy from its formal investiture in 2023, when the Honmyo Constitution came into effect. The rank is only ever held by the Emperor of Yata as Supreme commander-in-chief of the Imperial Yatanese Armed Forces. It is the most senior rank in the Navy, however Admiral remains the senior most rank an individual can hold. The next lower rank is Admiral.
The term originated in the Chinese military title 大元帥 (Da yuan shuai or Daigensui in Japanese), a title higher than 元帥 (Yuan shuai or Gensui in Japanese).
During the initial period of the reforms, the Admiral was the highest position which was meant to be held by the Emperor alongside the highest ranking officer in the navy. However, the then Toyotomi cabinet opposed this and instead proposed the creation of a separate rank which would rank the Emperor higher than the Admiral and also act as a ceremonial title. The title was 大徳海軍大将 (Daitoku-Kaiguntaisho) in the Jochuge system. However, after the Daichusho system received imperial assent, the title came to be as it is known today.
The kanji characters also refer to a Buddhist deity, Daigensui Myoo (大元帥明王), a Wisdom King worshipped by the Japanese Imperial Court since Emperor Ninmyo and by the Shingon sect, for its legendary miraculous power to quell foreign enemies and rebellions, just like a military leader.
Emperor Honmyo took office on 16th July 2023 (First Year of Honmyo) and is incumbent.
