Kaya Scodelario

Kaya Scodelario and Theo James discuss The Gentlemen "and keeping up with Guy Ritchie.

In spite of the same careers, Theo James and Kaya Scodelario hadn't met before getting cast in "The Gentlemen," a Netflix spin-off of Guy Ritchie's crime comedy of 2019. Both have shown up in young adult novel adaptations, appeared in well - liked TV shows, and flirted equally with big studio flicks and eclectic indies. Thus participating in the series, developed by Ritchie and co-written with Matthew Read, was an additional step in tandem.

"he makes good choices," Scodelario pointed out of James. "It's really nice to find out on Day one that you already respect the individual even though you have not worked with them yet."

In the show James plays Eddie Halstead, a member of a British aristocratic family that turns into duke when his father dies suddenly. Soon he discovers that their property is home to a weed empire led by Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone) and his daughter Susie, portrayed by Scodelario. With Susie's help, Eddie finds himself falling deeper and into the criminal underworld, eventually discovering he "has the heart of a killer," James says. It really is a wild ride with Ritchie's signature flair.

"Guy's world requires you to straddle humor and comedy very acutely, but you can not tip into the absurd because then all of the stakes start to be completely lost," James said. "He undercuts your sense of anticipation as an audience continuously, that I rather like. Nothing is completely serious, and I think that is crucial. It isn't a succession.

In the 8 episodes that exist separately from the film as a standalone story and now are streaming, Eddie and Susie initially collaborate, then backstab one another and ultimately realize that they are much better as a team. A lot of the series shifted and developed on set during the very long production process which occurred in England.

What did you find most exciting about this series?

Kaya Scodelario (): I was aware of the movie and I liked it, but I was interested to find out what the female lead would be. I took a minute to talk to the creatives involved once I was offered the role, just to ensure that Susie would be involved throughout the show. I had only 2 episodes to read and I needed to ensure she made an impact. I always feel that I owe it to the character I play to ensure they have the best story possible, and I was acutely aware of the fact that I was a woman in the Guy Ritchie universe.

Theo James: I loved the merging of the two worlds of the criminal underworld as well as the aristocracy. Guy Ritchie has already touched upon this before. Though the notion that it had been a part of the theme, of combining these two genres together, was thrilling. At the end of the day, it is a bit of entertainment. However, a few of the conceits behind that were really interesting, such as the British aristocracy being criminal in essence of managing land and passing that down through generations. We continue to be very classy, so sending that up in probably the most bombastic way was interesting.
