レア度：めったに見ない
形態：殻は厚くチョーク質で、層状になっている。左殻で地物に付着し、固着生活を送っているため殻形は不定形。殻表には同心円状に広がる紫～黒色のひれ状突起が波打っている。
生息域：日本を含む東アジア全域に分布し、潮間帯から潮下帯の砂礫底にしばしばカキ礁を形成する。葛登支ではめったに見ない。
生態：食材として有名であるが、生態学の分野では双方向性転換をすることで有名である (e.g. Park et al. 2012; Yasuoka & Yusa 2016; Broquard et al. 2020)。生後6年間追跡観察した例によれば、7000個体のおよそ6割が性転換をし、最大5回も性別が変わったらしい (Broquard et al. 2020)。雄の割合はサイズとともに減少し、また集団でいるほど増加すること、そして、集団にいた雄を実験的に単独にした場合、雌への性転換が起こりやすくなることが報告されている (Yasuoka & Yusa 2016)。濾過食者であり、捕捉した海水中の粒子状有機物を鰓で漉し取って食べる (楠木 1977)。
