Meet the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) :

Hello! My name is Katelyn Smith and I serve as the speech language therapist for students in grades 4-12 at Brandywine Heights Area School District. I have recently completed my graduate studies and received my Masters of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from East Stroudsburg University. I completed my clinical internship experiences with the Lehigh Valley Health Network, Schuylkill Rehabilitation Center and Brandywine Heights Elementary School upon completion of my graduate program. I have recently been awarded my Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology, providing me with CCC-SLP.

I was born and raised in Fleetwood and plan to stay in the area. I am an alumnae of Brandywine Heights and I am incredibly excited to come back and make a difference in students' lives in my hometown. In my free time I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading books, photography, and attend dirt track racing.

Purpose

A speech language pathologist (SLP) is a professional who engages in professional practice of assessment and treatment in areas including speech production, receptive/ expressive language, cognition, hearing, fluency, voice, augmentative alternative communication, social language, and feeding/ swallowing.

Speech language pathology is a medically-aligned field that requires an advanced degree such as a master's or doctorate to practice. The scope of a speech language pathologist includes premature and full-term infants, children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, developmental disorders, genetic disorders, stroke and brain injury, progressive neurological disorders, cognitive communication disorders, feeding disorders, hearing impairments, literacy, fluency, motor speech disorders, social communication, speech sound disorders, augmentative and alternative communication, expressive and receptive language disorders, voice disorders, dysphagia (swallowing disorders). Speech language pathologists diagnose and treat communication, swallowing, and related disorders of the oropharyngeal mechanisms in the following settings: schools, SLP's diagnose and treat children through special education. They often consult with administrators and educational staff. Skilled nursing facilities, SLP's diagnose and treat adult and geriatric populations in order to ensure quality of life; patients include those with progressive diseases like ALS, Parkinson's disease, and dementia. Private practices, SLP's work directly with clients and families to consolidate medical, education, and social data in order to evaluate and treat adults and children. Private practitioners generally work in clients' familiar environments (home or school) or a clinical space. Hospitals, SLP's diagnose and treat children and adults following an acquired or congenital neurological disruption. Hospital's include both inpatient and outpatient settings. NICU, SLP's diagnose and treat dysphagia in premature babies to ensure swallow safety in the first few days of life. Acute care, SLP's facilitate functional communication and ensure safe swallow while patients are still in the acute phases of injury.
