Katana Zero is a 2019 platform game created by the indie developer Justin Stander. Set in a dystopian metropolis, the neo-noir storyline follows Subject Zero, a katana-wielding assassin with amnesia who can slow down time and predict the future. Zero unravels his past while completing assassination contracts. Katana Zero features side-scrolling hack-and-slash gameplay in which the player attempts to kill all enemies in a level without being hit, using Zero's abilities to manipulate time, dodge attacks, and take advantage of environmental hazards. In-between levels, the story is told in sequences where the player converses with non-player characters through dialogue trees.

Katana Zero is a 2D platform and hack-and-slash game presented from a side-scrolling perspective.[1][2] Controlling the player character, the katana-wielding assassin Subject Zero,[3] the single player completes assassination contracts for a psychiatrist. Zero can run, jump, wall kick, pick up and throw items, attack using his katana, and dodge.[4] Zero's ability to slow down time and predict the future allows the player to activate a slow motion effect, enabling them to predict enemy movement easier, although use is limited by a meter that gradually refills.[5][6] The game features eleven levels,[7] which use Zero's precognition as a framing device; the player's attempts to complete each level are presented as possible scenarios Zero has foreseen.[1][5]

Aside from the amazing gameplay, the spot on soundtrack (which I had playing while writing this), intriguing relationships with your psychiatrist and your precocious kid neighbor, the central mystery surrounding your assassination targets, and increasingly absurd never-before seen uses of pixel art provide plenty more to love and keep you never wanting to turn away from the screen. I mean, I never thought I would have the option to cut lines of pixelated cocaine with a katana at the behest of a crazed Russian in a video game, but here we are. Note: I chose not to do this. My blade is sacred.

Katana Zero casts you as the Dragon, a bathrobe-wearing assassin carrying, yeah, a katana. Each mission involves the Dragon arriving at a location and try-die-repeating your way through enemies until you reach your eventual target. The Hotline Miami comparisons don't stop with this violent repetition though: there's also an excellent synthwave soundtrack, a fetish for '80s VHS aesthetic, and that aforementioned story, which involves the criminal underworld, unclear motives, an unreliable narrator, and which is told mainly via between mission visits to your apartment.

And then there's a "stealthy" bit, because that's just what a high-speed drug-fueled katana bisect-a-thon needs: a bit of hiding in a cupboard with a sushi roll up my arse waiting for a gap in the guard patrol routes, MULTIPLE SARCASMS. And it's flat-out fucking broken, because sometimes, the guards' positions reset in such a way that there are no gaps in the patrol routes and you run out the stage time limit waiting for the fat gits to stop farting visibility cones at the only door. 2351a5e196
