OverView : One of the biggest secrets of Mumbai is finally open to everyone and deserves to be widely seen . The heritage section of the building opened up and is open from 3-5 PM on weekdays only ( Not open on holidays and weekends). It costs Rs 200(Concession to School and College students with Valid Id - Rs 100)and the entrance is through a small gate on the right of the building and includes a free guided tour.
This allows a wonderful inside view of the building through which millions pass by everyday. It currently serves as the headquarters of the Central Railway and is used as an office by over 900 people daily. The first section is a rail museum where there are several displays about the construction of the building and some history about the railways in India for over the past 160 years. A very interesting section which gives an idea about the way millions of Indians used to travel. The ground floor also includes the huge dining area which has been fitted with modern tiles.
The highlight is of course when you walk in under the central dome. I would recommend first walking to the centre without looking up and then immediately let the grand view sink in. The level of detail on the architecture and the light flowing through the stained glass windows literally blows your mind away. You can walk up the staircase for upto 2 levels. In case you want some pretty pics, would recommend climbing to the 2nd level for a closer look. ALso pay attention to the various animals carved on the levels.
The first level also gives you access to the top of the ticketing hall where you can see the famous ceilings up close and personal. The 2nd level also gives way to a small lounge area where you are served free tea and biscuits.
I was very surprised when the guide told me that only around 1500 visitors had come through since it opened and more than 90% of them being foreign tourists. I would recommend that you take atleast an hour off from your busy schedule to see the hidden beauty right around the corner.
