要旨

Facial visible difference; from the inside out.

There is a wealth of work on facial recognition and facial expression, but less on what it is like to live with visible or invisible difference, whether from birth or acquired. Drawing on the experiences of such conditions as blindness, disfigurement, autism, Parkinson’s Disease and Möbius Sequence, (congenital absence of facial expression), the talk will explore how facial difference affects its subjects and, reflect what the face does in all of us.

Though some facial conditions produce impairments in facial functions, like eating and drinking or eye closure, some of the main effects are social, i.e. dependent on the behaviour of others. Data on this from the UK will be discussed along with ways to ameliorate these. Lastly I will discuss a project which aims to change people’s, and society’s, attitudes.

顔の見た目の違い：顔の内側からみて（日本語訳）

顔の認知と表情についての医療研究はあるが、生まれつきであれ、後天的であれ、顔の視覚的あるいは非視覚的な差異を内側から生きるとはどういうことなのかについてはあまり論じられない。視覚障害、外観損傷、自閉症、パーキンソン病、メビウス症候群（先天的な表情喪失）に陥った経験をとりあげながら、表情表出の問題が、主体にどのような影響を及ぼすかを解明し、私達皆にとって顔というものがどういう存在なのかについて考察する。

いくつかの表情表出の状態が、飲食、まばたきといった顔の機能障害を生み出すけれども、最大の問題は、他者の行動への依存といった社会的なものである。イギリスで得られたデータに基づいて、これらの問題をどう改善するか議論する。最後に、人々を変え、社会の側の態度を変える計画について議論する。
