Kanta Fujishima
Behavioral biologist and herpetologist
Welcome to my website! I am a PhD student at the Laboratory of Ethology, Department of Zoology, Kyoto University, and a research fellow for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. My current work focuses on the behavioral and trophic ecology of sea snakes of the Ryukyu region in southwestern Japan. My studies aim to understand trophic roles, movement ecology, and resilience towards climate change in sea snakes. I utilize multiple methods such as direct observations in the field, dissection of museum specimens, stable isotope analyses, and behavioral experiments in the lab. Behavioral studies of sea snakes have been hindered by their elusiveness, and logistical difficulties associated with their marine habitat. I believe that much more new and exciting questions can be brought up through direct, in-field observations of these fascinating reptiles. I therefore try to work in the field with scuba and snorkeling as much as possible.
