About Our Team

We are the Hawkeye Service Team that traveled to Kansas City with a focus in youth education. Over 6 days during Spring Break 2019, our team of 13 served a combined total of almost 350 person-hours. We served with four organizations: YMCA of Greater Kansas City, Boys Hope Girls Hope KC, Literacy KC, and Harvesters Food Bank.

But we didn't just spend spring break doing service.

We've also been engaging in curriculum surrounding service learning and social justice since the first week of the semester. During our trip to Kansas City, we had an opportunity to apply our coursework during our days of service, as well as in our nightly group reflections and journaling. We thought critically about what it means to serve, why we should serve, and how to serve in a sustainable manner.

And of course, we had fun, too.

Our team bonded over the most likely and unlikely things, which further contributed to this fantastic experience. We were lucky enough to visit landmarks including the National WWI Memorial, the City Market, and the Power and Lights district. We ate delicious BBQ and Pho, and played plenty of games of Contact and Mafia in the church and on the road.

Now, we want to share our experiences with you.

Our final assignment for this course is to combine all of our takeaways from this journey. We've broken into groups and chosen three main categories for our learning: Application of Knowledge, Leadership, and Values Clarification. We hope you enjoy what we've put together; thank you for taking time to read about our service trip.
