The top of the unit has 8 nylon screws that make it easy to remove and attach the lid for changing out the kalkwasser. Older versions of this unit had a touchpad controller to program on/off times for the pump to mix the kalk but this newer version was designed to be used with an aquarium controller. A digital timer can be used if a controller is not available.

Kalk on a big tank is one thing but I was wondering if any of you long time nano keepers used kalk reactors on a smaller tank. If so, how did you set it up so the ph doesn't swing too wildly and so that your corals aren't blasted with kalk water?

I myself know folks that have 100+ gallon tanks that use a kalk reactor in conjunction with cheaper non-reef based salt mixes like standard instant ocean. They dose mag to get it up to par and use the reactor to make up for the lower levels of calcium in the cheaper mix. Non-reef salts do usually have a low alk also so that buffers up any swings.

LPS - Appreciate the thoughts. Those are basically the reasons why I haven't used one in the past. I'm not really worried about the cost of salt in water changes since those will probably take place with or without the kalk. I do realize it's a bit overkill for a small tank in most instances (maybe all) but I also see this as a way of maintaining high alk/ca levels. I'll have an ato on the set up, so I thought adding kalk to the mix wouldn't hurt since the vehicle for getting it into the tank is already in place..

A lot of folks just put kalkwasser in their topoff water. A kalk slurry probably wouldn't be needed in such a small tank, but plenty of tanks have enough SPS and whatnot to utilize saturated kalkwasser.

I have the Aqua Medic Kalkwasser Stirrer 1000. It SLOWLY stirs the kalk slurry 24/7 creating a thoroughly saturated solution. The slurry is not agitated and dispersed into the water column and therefore does not create the risk of introducing kalk slurry directly into your tank. But like mentioned; for pump driven reactors timers are coordinated so that your ATO is not activated during kalk mixing. Either way, it's really pretty simple.

The motor driven design of our stirrer gently mixes your calcium hydroxide 24 hours a day. This ensures that you are always dosing the freshest possible kalkwasser to your system. Since the undissolved particles are always kept at the bottom and the clear liquid is always at the top, this is the safest available way to dose kalkwasser. The simple top loading design reduces the amount of time spent adding kalk powder to the reactor, which can be refilled in less than 1 minute.

Note that our stirrers are non-pressurized chambers; water enters through a 1/4" John Guest fitting in the lid and gravity drains out into your sump through the 1/2" union barb fitting in the side. The lid is not fixed in place; it lifts off for quick and easy kalk powder refills.

If you plan to install a kalk stirrer in your auto top-off system, we recommend this small valve to control the output of the pump to a fast drip. If you have a Tunze ATO, use this fitting to connect their tubing to the pushlock connector on the lid of the stirrer. Please see the kalk stirrer manual for additional installation tips and ideas.

Given the several occurrences of kalk overdoses we've seen in the last few months, this advice from RHF that I read on RC today seemed worth capturing here:

***

The following important points should help in dealing with a limewater overdose:

1. Don't panic! These overdoses do not usually cause a tank to crash.

2. The primary concern is pH. If the pH is 8.6 or lower, you need not do anything. If the pH is above 8.6, then reducing the pH is the priority. Direct addition of vinegar or soda water is a good way to accomplish this goal. Either one mL of distilled white vinegar, or six mL of soda water, per gallon of tank water will give an initial pH drop of about 0.3 pH units. Add either to a high flow area that is away from organisms (e.g., a sump).

3. Do not bother to measure calcium or alkalinity while the tank is cloudy. The solid calcium carbonate particles will dissolve in an alkalinity test, and all of the carbonate in them will be counted as if it were in solution and part of "alkalinity." The same may happen to some extent with calcium tests. Wait until the water clears, and at that point, alkalinity is more likely to be low than high. Calcium will likely be mostly unchanged.

4. The particles themselves will typically settle out and disappear from view over a period of 1-4 days. They do not appear to cause long term detrimental effects to tank organisms.

5. Water changes are not necessarily beneficial or needed in response to a limewater overdose.

I wholeheartedly agree. Prevention is the best approach. Make it so that if your delivery method fails (or even if your kalk stirrer fell over dumping its entire contents into your sump) you're not screwed.

I have always been very nervous about adding kalk as part of your top off scheme. The chances for overdose are just too high. I think the best was not to have an overdose is to avoid this practice in the first place. I think the kalk should be added in an overflow style system using a dosing pump.

we have been to cape town twice now staying the first time in the city and this february in camps bay. we feel we have one more trip to this area. having driven through kalk bay in feb 2012 on our way to boulders and cape point we thought it looked very pretty. lots of little 'designer' type shops, cafes etc. however we were put off by the extensive road works and didnt stop!!!! we didnt make it this year either as we only had 3 days before moving on to a safari. we are already thinking about feb 2014 and would like to base ourselves in kalk bay for 3 - 4 days. having done most of the 'must sees' we just want somewhere nice to 'chill out' and enjoy good food and wine before moving on to somewhere else for 3 days (any suggestions?) Would kalk bay fit the bill?

Hi. We stayed in kalk Bay for 3 days on our third visit to the (ta && ta.queueForLoad ? ta.queueForLoad : function(f, g){document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', f);})(function(){ta.trackEventOnPage('postLinkInline', 'impression', 'postLinks-49085038', '');}, 'log_autolink_impression');Cape Town area & Enjoyed our stay. We stayed at the Chartfield which I would definately recommend, their breakfasts are great, the staff are lovely & the location is within a short stroll of several nice places for dinner.
