GATHERING MUSIC

OPEN DOORS -- McManus

(Refrain) Open hearts, open minds, open doors,

we welcome all who seek to love the Lord.

Bring your joys, bring your burdens, all you rich and poor.

Open hearts, open minds, open hearts, open doors.

We gather here to praise and worship;

in our diversity we find a common ground.

We speak a language of one God, one love;

seek the Lord, sing God’s praise with joyful sound.

PSALM 4

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

1 Answer me when I call to you,

my righteous God.

Give me relief from my distress;

have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

2 How long will you people turn my glory into shame?

How long will you love delusions and seek false gods[b]?[c]

3 Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself;

the Lord hears when I call to him.

4 Tremble and[d] do not sin;

when you are on your beds,

search your hearts and be silent.

5 Offer the sacrifices of the righteous

and trust in the Lord.

6 Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”

Let the light of your face shine on us.

7 Fill my heart with joy

when their grain and new wine abound.

8 In peace I will lie down and sleep,

for you alone, Lord,

make me dwell in safety.

I JOHN 3:1-7

3 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.

Today's Art Witness & Sermon Focus

Artistic works reflect the spirit of human culture and can be occasions for Christians and others to reflect upon spirituality. Thinking together and reflecting on art can be a vehicle for having meaningful conversations about life and faith that might otherwise be difficult to engage. Colleen Ogle issued an invitation to persons in the congregation to “explore the Spirit through art” by visiting the Aminah Robinson exhibit currently at the Columbus Museum of Art. Several persons responded and here are their observations.
