Announcements

  • Today is Aldersgate Day! Aldersgate Day is celebrated on May 24 (or the Sunday closest) to commemorate the day in 1738 when John Wesley experienced assurance of his salvation. Wesley reluctantly attended a group meeting that evening on Aldersgate Street in London. As he heard a reading from Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans, he felt his "heart strangely warmed." READ MORE

  • Greeters and Ushers Needed: We are looking forward to in-person worship soon, but with three services per week additional help is needed in ushering and greeting. There will be a training held the first week of June, so don’t worry if you are new to this role. If you’re willing to lend a helping hand and a friendly (masked) face to the team, please email Beth Aiello, Director of Support Services, at beth@kingave.org. Please give your name and whether you’d like to serve at the 8:00, 9:30, or 11:00 service.

  • Let's Shower our Grads with CARDS! As we celebrate the accomplishments of our high school graduates from a distance this year, let’s celebrate them with a greeting card! Consider including a prayer or a piece of advice for our young people that are embarking on a new part of their life journey. The complete list of graduates and their mailing addresses is available by request from Erin Kendall at erin@kingave.org or Pastor Colleen at colleen@kingave.org.

  • Additional Upper Room Resources for COVID-19 Pandemic: The Upper Room daily devotional is offering Resources for Spiritual Wellness in Anxious Times for our church during the journey through the COVID-19 wilderness we’re all navigating. This includes timely practices for individuals and families including digital devotionals, link to morning prayer on Facebook Live, videos, e-courses, podcasts, etc.

Welcome and Gathering

Open Doors - Chris McManus

(Refrain) Open hearts, open minds, open doors,

we welcome all who seek to love the Lord.

Bring your joys, bring your burdens, all you rich and poor.

Open hearts, open minds, open hearts, open doors.

We gather here to praise and worship;

in our diversity we find a common ground.

We speak a language of one God, one love;

seek the Lord, sing God’s praise with joyful sound. (Refrain)

Opening Prayer

Creator of the universe, you made the world in beauty, and restore all things in glory through the victory of Jesus Christ.

We pray that, wherever your image is still disfigured by poverty, sickness, selfishness, war and greed, the new creation in Jesus Christ may appear in justice, love, and peace, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Today's Scripture:

Acts 1:6-14

6 So when they had come together, they asked Jesus, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ 9When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, ‘People of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. 13When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Psalm 68

1 Let God rise up, let enemies be scattered; let those who hate God flee. 2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; as wax melts before the fire, let the wicked perish before God. 3 But let the righteous be joyful; let them exult before God; let them be jubilant with joy.

4 Sing to God, sing praises to God's name; lift up a song to the One who rides upon the clouds— God's name is the Lord—be exultant.

5 Father of orphans and protector of widows is God in the holy habitation. 6 God gives the desolate a home to live in; The Lord leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious live in a parched land.

7 O God, when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, 8 the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain at the presence of God, the God of Sinai, at the presence of God, the God of Israel. 9 Rain in abundance, O God, you showered abroad; you restored your heritage when it languished; 10 your flock found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy.

32 Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth; sing praises to the Lord,

33 O rider in the heavens, the ancient heavens; listen, God sends out his voice, a mighty voice. 34 Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel; and whose power is in the skies. 35 Awesome is God in the sanctuary, the God of Israel; God gives power and strength to the people.

Blessed be God!

Pastoral Prayer

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father*, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Today's Message

Sermon Reflection

When has your faith been about wonder and awe?

What meaning does Christ's "going up" have for you?

Do you relate more to a God of power or a God of love?

How do greed, vengeance, and fear parch your life?

Think of a confrontation story of "us against them."

Think of a love story of "us helping one another."
