TODAY'S SERVICE (recorded earlier today)

GATHERING MUSIC - LORD OF ALL HOPEFULNESS

Lord of All Hopefulness

1. Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares can destroy,

Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,

Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

2. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,

Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,

Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

3. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,

Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,

Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

4. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,

Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,

Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

I JOHN 3:1-3

3 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

Thanks be to God!

JEREMIAH 1:1-5

1 The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. 2 The word of the Lord came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah, 3 and through the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, down to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

Thanks be to God!

Celebrating the Life of Kurt Brooks

Kurt Brooks (June 29, 1945 - June 12, 2020) and Bud Dixon, his partner of 26 years, have faithfully worshiped at King Avenue Church since 2004, where Communion Sunday and the congregation holding hands to sing “The Lord’s Prayer” at the end of worship was always a highlight for Kurt. “For All the Saints” was one of Kurt’s favorite hymns, and so it is especially fitting that we sing it for him.

A quiet, gentle man, Kurt was an accountant who ended his career with retirement in 2008 from the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services as head of the division of Medicaid/Medicare Reimbursement. Not long after retirement, he and Bud learned that Kurt was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. With Bud’s loving care (and nursing experience) they enjoyed another 11 ½ good years together during which Kurt gardened and continued to research his family genealogy. Kurt and Bud enjoyed travel together, eating out, and being with friends and family—including Kurt’s two sons and four grandchildren.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God for this gift and thanks be to God for the life of Kurtis Brooks.
