OPENING PRAYER (11:00am)

O God, whose mercy is ever faithful and ever sure,

who art our refuge and our strength in time of trouble,

visit us, we beseech thee - for we are in trouble.

Most of all, we need to turn to thee,

O God, and our crucified Lord,

for only his humility and his strength can heal and free us. Amen.

OPENING HYMN - Heal Us, Emmanuel, Hear Our Prayer

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

I CORINTHIANS 1:18-25

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;

the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[a]

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

I CORINTHIANS 1:26-31

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[a]

Celebrating the Life of Dirk Orr

KAUMC member Dirk Orr died August 17, 2020, leaving behind Dan Johnson, his partner of many years and husband for one month, and father, Charlie Orr, who moved from Dayton to be near Dirk and is now a member of KAUMC. Dirk was a person of great personal warmth, bringing abundant compassion to his work as an oncology R.N., and a loving spirit and joy to family, friends, and to this congregation, especially in and through the choir. His beautiful tenor voice made its KAUMC debut long ago in the King’s Way Singers and has blessed the Chancel Choir for many years. The choir visited Dirk and Dan’s home last week to bring Dirk the comfort of music and they will miss him sorely. Dirk also sang with Illuminati, the sacred ensemble of the Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus. Music was Dirk’s language of spirituality and he shared it generously with others.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 24 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 10051 Brewster Lane, Powell, OH. A memorial service will be held at a future date.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, we are not alone. Thanks be to God! And thanks be to God for the life of Dirk Orr.
