Welcome and Gathering

Open Doors - Chris McManus

(Refrain) Open hearts, open minds, open doors,

we welcome all who seek to love the Lord.

Bring your joys, bring your burdens, all you rich and poor.

Open hearts, open minds, open hearts, open doors.

We gather here to praise and worship;

in our diversity we find a common ground.

We speak a language of one God, one love;

seek the Lord, sing God’s praise with joyful sound. (Refrain)

Open Doors

Prayer of Confession

O God, we are not much different from the people on the first Palm Sunday. We are hungry for a savior. We are hungry for saviors. We seek those who will provide leadership, cures, bailouts, and solutions. We gather like those in the crowd to glimpse the ones who will save us.

Let us not be disappointed when the special one appears; even though we are certain to be surprised; and give us the wisdom and courage to follow where the one on the donkey might lead us.

PRAYERS IN SILENCE

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God's love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

Ride On, King Jesus

Traditional Spritual/arr. Hall Johnson

Hymn #280, v. 1, 3

Today's Scripture:

Matthew 21:1-11

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’ This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, ‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’ The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’

Philippians 2:5-11

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited,

but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form,

he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross.

Pastoral Prayer

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father*, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Family Reflection

I wonder how the stories of Jesus help you connect to God.

I wonder how God helps you connect with people.

I wonder how you can find new and different ways to show God's love to others.

Download your own Palm Branch, color it, cut it out, and wave it!

Today's Message

Sermon Reflection

What parades or rallies have you attended?

Why did you go?

Were you a participant or spectator? What is the difference to you?

Think of a time when empathy made you feel connected.

What do you think of salvation as connection?

Does Jesus give you a voice, credibility, and significance?

Can you believe in Jesus and be willing to be surprised?

Celebrating the Life of Ophelia Morgan

Ophelia Morgan died on Saturday, March 28, as a result of a fall. She was a young 92. Ophelia was the mother of Dr. Nancy Vaughan and had lived in Florida for the past several years. She was a person of care, good humor, and support. She deeply loved her family and is greatly missed by them. She loved the friends she made at KAUMC. She felt part of the community, especially the UMW.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God for the life and gift of Ophelia Morgan.
