Received email from Norton-Lifelock. Saying that they will charge my credit card because I did not cancel the trial plan. Email came through my husband's email. I called number listed : (804) 464-3552. As soon as I called this number: some one was access my computer-remote accessing, my mouse was moving around. I spoke to a man name: Edward Wilson. I asked if they were accessing my computer, of course he stated he wasn't doing this. He stated they will be refunding my money of $249 and asked me to go to this site to fill out this Refund Form, which I did. Anyway, I got transferred to Eric Givens who proceeded to tell me to go to bank account to see if I got refund. Like a dummy, I checked a bank account an instead of being refunded $24.99 I was refunded $2499. Now Norton an Lifelock wanted the money back and tried to get me to refund it through CashApp or Another app that can transfer money. I was on phone with them for 3 hours. Before I realized they were scamming me. They even tried to get me to put money on Gift Cards, which I refused! Anyway, I closed my accounts and reported it to police. The scammers had my credit cards and bank account numbers, therefore I closed my accounts.

And thanks for the tips on file system cleanup...I'll look into that, but what amazes me is that Nod32 says that it is scanning 1.1 million files, while only 140,000 files (closer to the actual number of physical files, I'm sure) are found on my computer.

I have eset av 7 I ran a scan and when finished I found some virus's in the folder I cleared them all. I checked the tools area and noticed that 18 was still showing on the tools page. I opened the quarantine folder and it was empty. I ran a scan again no change. I completely uninstalled the program and reinstalled it the number still remains not sure how to zero out the count. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the help. I have looked at every folder for quarantined files none found. I have uninstalled once more in safe mode using the clean up tool. Removed every ESET entry in registry and searched the whole computer for ESET folders and removed all of them. I re-installed a different version of ESET. And I have a 18 file number count showing on the tools area. The quarantined folder is empty. There must be a software problem or a left over registry entry that I cannot find. Thanks for any help with this. BTW I noticed another post similar to this that person called this the ghostly files.

This makes SSNs much sought-after commodities on the black market. In fact, the 2018 Identity Fraud Study from Javelin Strategy & Research, found that for the first time, more SSNs than credit card numbers were stolen last year.

So, when my healthcare provider asks for my Social Security number, I leave the line blank and recommend other patients do so as well," says Dena B. Mendelsohn, senior policy counsel for Consumer Reports.

If you use Medicare, you have to share your MBI with healthcare providers. According to Medicare, you need to protect the new card as you would a credit card, giving the number only "to doctors, pharmacists, other healthcare providers, your insurer, or people you trust to work with Medicare on your behalf." (And watch out for phone, mail, and internet scams that request your MBI.)

In some cases, your healthcare provider may say they need your Social Security number simply because they have a field in their computerized medical records that must be filled in. The solution? Ask them to use zeros.

Quiz the staff on their security practices and repeat your concerns to the doctor if you still don't get satisfaction. "If your provider or their front desk staff insists on using your Social Security number, ask them why and how they will protect that information," says Mendelsohn.

Scammers may call you directly on the phone and pretend to be representatives of a tech company. They might even spoof the caller ID so that it displays a legitimate support phone number from a trusted company. They'll probably ask you to install applications that give them remote access to your device. Using remote access, these experienced scammers can misrepresent normal system messages as signs of problems.

Scammers might also initiate contact by displaying fake error messages on websites you visit, displaying support numbers and enticing you to call. They may also put your browser in full screen mode and display pop-up messages that won't go away, apparently locking your browser. These fake error messages aim to scare you into calling their "technical support hotline".

Although law enforcement can trace phone numbers, cybercriminals often use disposable mobile phones, spoofed caller ID, or stolen mobile phone numbers. Treat all unsolicited phone calls with skepticism. Don't provide any personal information.

Many banks will use your SSN as a primary identifier when you call for help or try to make changes to your account. With your account number and SSN (which can often be found together after data breaches), fraudsters can access your account, add themselves as a user, or transfer out your savings using digital wallets like Zelle and Cash App.

For example, the recent AT&T data breach leaked personal data, including Social Security numbers, from over 73 million customers [*]. Leaked data almost always ends up on the Dark Web, where it can be purchased and traded by hackers and scammers.

Contact the IRS if you notice that someone used your stolen Social Security number to file a tax return or receive a tax refund. You can report tax-related identity theft by responding to the IRS tax notice, completing Form 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit, or by calling 1-800-908-4490 for specialized assistance.

Additionally, if a fraudster used your Social Security number to create identification records with government agencies, inform the SSA, IRS, and your Secretary of State office that handles fraud identification.

Tech support scammers may try to trick you with a pop-up window that appears on your computer screen. It might look like an error message from your operating system or antivirus software, and it might use logos from trusted companies or websites. The message in the window warns you about a security issue on your computer and tells you to call a phone number to get help.

Safeguarding your Social Security number is one of the best ways to prevent identity theft. Not only should you never carry your Social Security card in your wallet or purse, in case of loss or theft, but you should rarely give out your Social Security number anywhere. The more places that have your Social Security number, the more at risk it is of falling into the wrong hands.

Identity theft involves the impersonation of an individual through the fraudulent use of his or her personal and account information - e.g., driver's license, Social Security number, bank account and other numbers, as well as usernames and passwords.

Your Social Security number is also going to be mandatory for anything that triggers tax reporting, including your employer reporting your wages to the IRS, said Alan Butler, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a nonprofit focused on defending privacy and identity rights.

Government agencies that provide benefits can also request your number, including the US Department of Labor and state agencies that administer Medicaid. Those requests should come with a disclosure form that explains whether the number is required or optional, confirms the agency's authority to ask for it and explains what it'll be used for.

By the time you're an adult, your Social Security number has been entered into so many databases it's impossible to keep it 100% secure. But there are steps consumers can take to better protect their account numbers.

Don't carry your Social Security card in your wallet or purse. Keep it in a safe place at home. And shred any documents or pieces of mail that include your number, rather than just throwing them out. Also, If you're asked for your SSN, find out why.

You should also regularly check your reports for any strange activity -- a free copy of all three is available annually from AnnualCreditReport.com -- and create an account on the Social Security website to see if anyone is accessing benefits using your number. 0852c4b9a8
