Slightly longer version:I always include an overall photo from drive-train and non-drive-train side. In addition to that one of the cockpit and close ups of the drivetrain and brakes. That should include most parts of interest. In case of suspension photos of the sliding surface of fork and damper could be of intereset for potential buyers.

However, it's vital that if you take ANY photographs, they need to be of decent quality, have to have good lighting - preferably cold-white LEDs or daylight is even better- and background (No dirty living-rooms or unmade beds in the background, please. Also, please don't put your workshop/garage in shot as almost every photo of a bike with their garage shot in has a horrific mess that, if anything, merely sets off my OCD and makes me not want to look at all.... < /RANT>)

It's also handy if you take a photo of the whole bike, and show what products you use on the bike for maintenance (Lubricants, degreasers, cleaners, etc) so that people can see how the bike is maintained. Hardly essential, as a good bike will show in the pictures, but seeing what's used is good reassurance to a prospective buyer.

The big lesson from NYC (which holds true in Portland and every American city), is that until you reach a certain tipping point in street design and network permeability that forcibly keeps drivers and cars out of the system, almost no amount of bike infrastructure will feel safe for the majority of people.

One mid Oct 2011 ride on a folding bike from Amtrak station north past Central Park to a hostel, a glorious blue sky Friday. That night a storm blew NYC with blowing rain with snow that remained til late Saturday. Sunday morning, no traffic! Just enough snow left to stop mooselike motorists at their doorstep. Bike ride return to station a little chilly but dry and invigorating along the Hudson.

The drive side crank should be aligned with the chainstay or positioned at the 90-degree angle, level with the ground. This way, the crank is not obscuring any other parts of the bike. This also creates a harmonious composition with the crank filling some of the empty gap between the bottom bracket and the front wheel.

This rule requires you to always photograph the bike without the pedals and free of all other accessories, including bottle cages. Removing the pedals is only practical if you are taking catalog shots. I usually only go as far as removing the water bottles from the cage and removing any other accessories that I find too distracting in the picture.

If there is one thing that I would have done differently, is to have placed the supporting stick in a place where it is easier to remove in Photoshop (more on this below). I find the stick a little distracting and this picture would have looked better with a self-balancing bike effect.

The shot below tells a story; one of a country scene where the bike belongs to. Communication is clear: this bike is ready for a long weekend ride. Notice that I opted to remove the water bottles from the front cages (one on each fork blade) as I thought they were too distracting.

Here is another shot that tells a story. Just like the shot above, I removed the water bottle from the cage but I opted to hang my goggles on the handlebar. I figured the goggles would add a human element without actually having a person in the shot. The snow on the tires and the downtube show that the bike was ridden to this location (which it was) adding to the sense of adventure.

Including a person in the picture completely changes the story being told about the bike. The human element shifts the focus away from the bike alone and paints a picture of how the bike is used by the rider. Some rules still apply: drive side and cranks leveled being a couple of them.

You can jam the stick in the hollow part of the bottom bracket, rest the chainstay on the fork end of the stick, or wedge the stick between the rear quick-release lever and the bike frame. It might look precarious but it is really easy to balance a bike on a stick.

This technique is the easiest one to execute but it requires the use of a tripod and a remote trigger for your camera. But once you have the pictures, photoshop makes it easy to remove yourself from the image.

The goal here is to have a reference picture for the background area where you are standing and another picture where you are not making any contact with the bike. Instead of trying to explain this technique with words only, I made a quick video explaining how I set up the shot and how to edit the photo in Photoshop.

Now that you have the establishing glamour shots, you can focus on capturing the details. Get close enough to show the details but not too close that the viewers lose perspective that you are photographing a bike.

Take out the modern street furniture and you have kids wearing the same expressions as many of the shots in Bert Hardy's or Don McCullin's photos of British kids in the East End of London or Liverpool or Belfast

You can't be a photographer without taking photos, but after the birth of his son, DPReview's newest editor, Eric Limer, gives much more thought to sharing them. And that, he explains, is why Google Photos is his choice for Gear of the Year.

This morning, DivePhotoGuide (DPG) announced the winning images in the 2023 edition of its underwater photography competition. From a juvenile imperial blackfish catching a ride on a jellyfish to a hunting frogfish, see which photos floated to the top of this competition.

Capturing awe-inspiring images takes a little more effort than the quick happy-snap. It requires patience, planning, and stepping outside the box to find the best perspective possible. The best place to start when taking on a new skill is by talking to the masters of the craft, so we sat down with professional photographer and bike aficionado Wayne Reid to get expert advice on viewing bikes through a different lens.

All Bodies on Bikes co-founder Marley Blonsky was all smiles while cruising up Boyer Avenue. All Bodies on Bikes was among the affinity based bike clubs that rode No. 43 as Cascade intentionally sought to increase inclusivity and show that everyone is welcomed to join the excitement of STP.

I followed riders for a few miles in Seattle before driving to Portland where volunteers, staff members, and our friends at the Portland Bicycle Club were busy setting up the finish line festival that included a beer garden, food trucks, music, a secure bike corral, massages, and more.

People ride all kinds of bikes on STP. Many rode it on electric bikes, including Manuel Ramos and Susan Taber, below. "I rode STP twice on a road bike, and this is my first time on an ebike," Ramos said. They carried spare batteries and charged up overnight after riding 130 miles to Toledo. "I'm a 240-pound guy, and we ride on the lowest level of assist and just coast on the downhills and turn it off on the flats."

Board member Gabe Castillio, founder of the Filipino bicycling group Gruppetto Cycling, rode his electric road bike and looked like he could have done another 100 miles. Then there are these guys below, who rode it on vintage cruisers!

We are busy collecting and editing photos from the middle of STP and will file another post in the coming days with more images. Meantime, we offer a huge thank you to all the volunteers, participants, and sponsors who made STP 43 such a success. If you missed STP and want another chance to ride 200+ miles over two days, sign up for R2B2 on Aug. 20 and 21.

Then, do not cut part of your bike off. It leaves an impression of an untrustworthy amateur at best, fraud who is trying to hide things at worst - are you hiding something? Flat tire, broken fender or pedal? So this not good at all:

Next, remember: perspective is king. Make sure the bike is in the center of the photo with a lot of space left all around it, and keep the camera straight: top-down photos from a short distance distort the perspective - your bike then looks weirdly shaped. So don't do this:

While you have the bike set up, make more photos from different angles. Both sides, angled photo from the front and back are a must. Especially the drivetrain (right) side is crucial. Add chain and tyres details and you have a great head start.

Note: The details are only complimentary, and should always be attached to a set of photos of the whole bike. Unless you have a saddle made of gold, details on their own will not sell your entire bike...

We could talk about this for days, but in general, understanding how to expose a photo will help you isolate your subjects in interesting light. If you have a strong light source at night, it is best to darken your image to highlight that. If your subject is in the shadows, brighten your image to highlight them. If shooting on an iPhone, tap your screen and then slide your finger up for brighter or down for darker. I find iPhones typically overexpose photos, and I almost always like to darken them.

Try to balance photos that give a sense of environment, photos of your buddies, photos of food and strangers and night time and morning and arrange them either in chronological order, or as in the passing of one day (morning to night time photos), or randomly, or best to worst or worst to best, or try to arrange them to match the cadence of the trip. You can even get cheap prints done at your local camera store and sequence them in a binder if you want! With all good storytelling, try to create the feeling you experienced in the viewer. Enjoy your photo story! 17dc91bb1f
